Big walls make FPS drop?

Post by Fooli »

Software:Universal Client
Version Number:0.49.9

Anywhere with players ;)

Description:
Just wondering why framerate seems a bit lower at the mo... looking at profile on Phong, also on Drellis, it's all basically zero except player render time, which seems to leap from 15ms to 30ms plus whenever an animation kicks in: and that's with just one fairly low poly player onscreen (1000 odd polys). Anything changed recently that might affect it?

ok.. I don't think it's players. I think it's walls. There seems to be a direct relation between wall height and framerate... walls at 100, 35fps; walls at 1000, 14fps. Same view, same texture, same everything else. Can't imagine why but it seems to be true :) Drellis has massive walls at the mo... and I was playing with different heights on Phong. There's the same (but much tinier) negative effect with wider walls too, but mostly it's height. Doesn't it just scale the same polys? Doesn't add any more does it?

ive tidied the code there a bit, and i dont know whether its just that, or the dxt stuff, or just some random combination of build events, but fps seems better on drellis for me now (0.49.9.2). if its no different for u reply and ill reopen this..

speaking of alpha blending on walls...

Image

The red block is a simple cuboid model with additive alpha transparency: where it's displayed against the walls it disappears...

notice that with the starport beam. can visit drellis for an example.
the starport is in a large walled in area, but the beam disseapears where it should be visible in front of the walls.
