Is it possible?

Post by Mishka »

Is it possible to make a building model float on water?

I want to put a stationary ship model floating near the port. But each time the sea rises, it invades the model (it sinks). I want the model to rise as the sea rises, like any vehicle model in boat mode.

it not possible yet...not correctly anyway.

a way around it would be to try and animate the model going up and down so it matches the sea level change. would be a pain, and would be time consuming, and might not look corret to everybody all the time, but it would somewhat work.

id suggest making the waves smaller on your world so the boat doesnt look so funny sitting motionless in the water. i know... a big sacrifice to make for just 1 model. if you try to animate the motion of the boat to match the sea it would be nearly impossible. its like a dj matching up beats on some turntables. the beat would line up for a song or so, but eventually they would go out of sink with one another unless theyre timed to the exact same frequency which is probably impossible.

or make the boat bigger so the waves dont appear to engulf it.

or..... instead of animating the boat to go up and down to match the waves, add a slight rocking back and forth animation to the model. it would appear to be affected by the water, but you wouldnt have to match it to the waves as much. it would probably look funny sometimes too.

I've never tried it, but I wonder if a mapvehicle would work.

Hmm, that's interesting. I'll give it a try when I have the time.

from all i have seen, map vehicles will stay in the exact position they were in when you left them. be it floating in the air, or stationary in water.

sim's idea is probably the best so far.
small waves + a animating it to rock slightly will give it the illusion of sitting on the lake with the gentle waves moving it.

It will take some trial and error, but you can use the model editor to raise the model. You may have to do it a few times until it is right, but it should work. It will only work for that specific water depth as well. Not sure how to make it move with the waves, so my solution is probably not going to work unless you are skilled at animating the model to move with the waves, which may be impossible.
