this is wat they say..
C:\Program Files\Universal\Clients\Atractor.exe
A device attached to the system is not functioning. <--- This is the 1st 1 that it tells me)
The D3D8.DLL file is linked to missing export DDRAW.DLL:UnlockCB. (This is the 2nd 1 i get)
and it wont let me play the game.. until i fix this problem...
i get .DLL problems with the game
This may be a pretty dumb question.. but.. do you even have a decent 3d graphics card??? I really don't think a 4mb or less graphics card would work, I mean, mine's a 64mb and I only get up to 10fps on average (even less when I look at grouped up buildings or the sun, down to 1 or 2 fps)... =/
It'd be better if you gave your system specs as it would help a lot more.
Edit: Oh and if you do have a graphics card, get the latest drivers for it.
Yet again another edit: If you plan to only play on Zoric only(which is probably the only server most people should play on due to the fact there's actually things to do... unlike the others ones.. >_>) (don't shoot me hedgehog). Then... well.. um.. You read the server is going down for around a week or so, so yeah.. assume from that...

The game is quite cpu intensive, I believe, and yeh, needs a fairly chunky gfx card to get a decent framerate. However, you can improve performance by switching off shadows, transparent water etc in the graphic options (F1 for small mode to get to the menus). You can also use .drawdist to change the, er, draw distance - eg .drawdist 250. That'll help loads. Finally, it tends to run quicker fullscreen than windowed, like lots of DX games.
For comparison, mit used to get about 5-10fps with his old celeron 333 and voodoo banshee; I get 30 or so on this 1.8Ghz athlon with a radeon 9000 with everything set to maximum apart from shadows, which don't work properly on my gfx card (yet) :)
Zoric can be a bit testing framerate-wise - lots and lots of stuff in close proximity, and a lot of models that don't have LoDs (yet). And anywhere with lots of druids is likely to suffer too, because it's a really inefficient model with lots of polys... performance will improve as mit optimises code and i optimise polycounts.

Fooli, that whole post was about frame rate. (btw we're talking about the errors this guy is getting ) and with with the f at the bottom of your post?
Anyways, this "A device attached to the system is not functioning." was mainly talking about your video card, the reason I mentioned to get the latest driver. And for that reason, Directx could not be used without a video card, so you got that 2nd error.
If they both don't work, and you can play other games with the current settings that use d3d, then well, tough luck. Can't say it's the client side of things. If you're using win 98, and your graphics card happen to be a geforce (specifically #2), yeah, they're not very compatible at all... I know i tried a geforce2 on mine, it messed up my computer more than a virus... in a way... guess it was just the drivers, but eh, it still messed it up
