New galactic bounty system
New code has been checked in to change the galactic bounty system. This will become enforced whenever the gal server is next updated by fooli (who'll probably post here when it is, you watch... :] )
New Bounty Rules..
When you've killed someone who..
a) isnt carrying illegal cargo, and
b) doesnt already have a bounty
..you will be given a galactic bounty. Another player may then kill you and earn that bounty - which is taken from your galactic cash. If you cannot afford to pay the bounty, your lasers will be removed.
The bounty you're given when you kill an 'innocent' is now calculated as follows :
Rule 1 : If its the first time you've killed someone, you'll get a 'Slap On The Wrists' bounty of 10cr.
Rule 2 : If its not the first time you've killed someone, but you dont already have a bounty, you'll be given a galactic bounty of either 50cr or 10% of your current wealth. Whichever is highest.
Rule 3 : If you kill someone with less cash than you, the bounty will be 20% of your current wealth instead of 10%
Rule 4 : (The Robin Hood Rule) If you have more than 100cr, and kill someone with more than 5 times your wealth, the bounty will be 1% instead of 10%.
Rule 5 : If you already have a bounty, it will increase by 5% of your current wealth each time you kill someone. (Or by 0.5% if the 'Robin Hood' rule applies).
As usual with stuff on this lil game, this new system is something we'll need to try out a bit to see if it works well (or at all :] ). More changes will follow soon (including special bounty rewards for killing players who have attacked innocents in federation space). Feedback welcome..

Man you are joking about the lasers. This may not go to well in the safty zones. May or may not stop newbi killing newbi.
I the sandgroper dose not worry aout lasers in the non safty zones. It's them things that lock on to you when your in range of them.
Foot note: Man I hate them system jumps when you are carry the good stuff.

why yall freaking about the lazers rule.... IF you dont have enough to pay your BOUNTY then you lose your lazers. i dont see this happening much, IMO. since bounty is a % of your credits, and the way the bounties figured, any 'newbs killing newbs' that this would affect could easily !resetme to get back into action. I dont think its going to be anything that will cause any huge problems.

i dont mind the bounty system at all being in place, but instead of punishing the winner, why not only punish the winner if they were the aggressor. being attacked and getting a big bounty for winning instead of letting someone kill you is kinda crazy to me. just an idea, makes more sense than saying person a won so person a gets the bounty. i was attacked and won, and since only 4 other players have anywhere close to as many credits i get punished for defending myself with a 353,000 bounty. whats the point in defending yourself?

That's a reasonable point, to a degree - it seems slightly harsh.
But you wouldn't be attacked if you didn't have a bounty in the first place.... it's a legal system, innit. The only people with bounties are people who've done Bad Things. People who've done Bad Things are therefore targets for anyone passing. If you don't wanna get attacked, don't do Bad Things. If you do Bad Things, expect to get attacked and expect it to get expensive. Bounty isn't just a nice prize for people who win it: it's a big red sign that says "I'm a criminal! I'm a criminal!" :)
I've no idea whether it's possible to determine who started an aggressive action (seems tricky to me: while I'm sure the game knows whose laser hit which shield, etc, what happens if you get hit by a single stray (non-damaging shot)? but maybe that's something mit can think about. What happens, for instance, if we have two players without bounties: Player A decides to take the dark path towards pirate-dom, and attacks Player B: but Player B is l33t, and kicks his ass? Would B get a bounty? That wouldn't be fair. Would A? That would be fair, even though he lost.

Wel, now that I see how this is working in the game I think its rediculus. Think about it-
All the pirates and bounty hunters are going to make hundreds of thousends, while other players are going to be making nothing compared to that. And for a trader like me, I go from a couple different star systems to theplace were I sell. And how am I and others on different routs supposed to defend themselfs against the pirates and hunters who come along with these really expensive ships and everything? While trying to trade. The highest bounty I ever saw was 600, but now im seeing 300,000. Wich is a very large step. When i joined the game 1k was like 1m. But now, its practicly worth nothing. Yesturday I was getting a lot of money doing my trade route, but now its going to take weeks for it to even out with others. And what about the new players? They will have no chance at all in the game. And its not very fair to the pirates either, because they get punished for winning. And your lazers taken away?! I dont even think anyones found were toget the new ones yet! And if a pirite loses his bounty then e loses almost all his money! And me being part of SR, hat sucks as well. So Im on for both sides, this new bounty system sucks!

And what about the noobs? Like this one guy i was just helping, he wanted to see what would happen if he was shot. So I shot him, he didnt die, but. If I did however kill him he would lose his lazers, because he had a 10 crdit bounty(it was a glitch) and he had 7crdits. If someone killed him hed have no lazers, and even if someone found the new weapons, he couldnt get to them for about a week! And I bet they are expensive, the new weapons.
