can hi-res space station be optimised any?

Post by Mit »

On my setup, the 2100 poly hi-detail space station (combined with the alpha'd nebulas n such) cause me to frame out a bit. (Particularly coz the station is drawn twice, once extra for the additive alphablended lights).
Its not a huge prob, and im sure is ok on most other ppl's systems, but if theres anything to optimise on there that doesnt reduce quality noticeably could it be chopped a bit?
(doesna matter if choppin it would mean reducin the curviness or anythin..)

erm... right. It's not 2100, the hi detail is 3270, the medium 2400 and the low 1024. But whaddaya expect, it's a feckin space station innit :)

There's prolly no easy way to optimise it. It'd need remapping etc, and would be easier just to rebuild it but with less detail. But that'd take a lil while.

Probably easiest of all would be a different design: I do like the classic wheel but at that size you have to whack up the polycount or it looks pants.I know: the current station is version 4 :)

I could just make it four-sided I spose, or some other small-sided number, and cut the pretense at a smooth circular shape.... or how about Elite style but with a few more chamfered bits and beveled faces and that (octahedron, was it?)

The ones I like best are the enormous X-style "scaffold" type designs. They prolly wouldn't spin, which'd be a shame, but the main problem is having to use alpha to do the struts (looks shite) or having a polycount so huge you'd be getting 1fps.

I thought you were going to write auto-LoD stuff anyhow :)

PS: better solution: i'll give you my old gfx card. It's 3 years old now but it's still years ahead of whatever you're using :)

PPS: congrats on the first sensible post btw :)
