1. It's only for the current beta, it not for all beta, link wouldn't work in the future
2. I've never seen anyone that has asked to join beta been rejected, but ill move not, didn't think anyone would care.
also, anyone can get access to the beta download by clicking on usergroups, selectiong "closed beta" then clicking on join group. you get a message like staff will review your application... then downloads are accessable

to a new account the usergroups section isen't available as thier not in a group yet (i tested this last week actually)
yea, magic says no direct linking because if bugs are found that require a beta to be takin off the page temporarily. yea, anybody that joins is accepted (i agree with your view thier) but magic says people have to request it so they can still moderate who is in it for some odd reason (theirs already a discussion going on elsewhere in the recent topics about it).

not direct linking isnt as important as it used to be with the advent of auto update the argument always was that downloading a client from another location could mean that the player has to download a second client if the one they downloaded is out of date.
however it does still have implications if we need to issue a second client to fix bugs etc... so we would prefer it if the client was not distributed outside of this site.... nothing personal kev we have asked all site owners who have added the client to their sites to do the same. we have no problems with you creating a link to the page where the downloads are hosted.
ok lets finalize this beta group argument... all users need to have their beta applications approved by staff at this time. this is to prevent abuse of the client i.e using bugs to gain an advantage over other players without reporting the bugs, to physically limit the numbers of beta testers as beta testing with a small player base is far easier than beta testing with a large player base (mits limit has historically been 50) and although not an issue at present their is plans that certain areas of the website will be available to beta testers and not public (i.e bug reporting etc... ) the staff group specifically wanted it so the users couild be removed from the beta testing group if their behaviour did not warrant the extra benefits of being a member of that group (i.e having software full of bugs and machine crashing regularly ).
thanks for testing this zar/paint as it has highlighted a problem in the website code in that the beta software is available for users who are awaiting approval. that will be fixed tommorow when i am less tired and a bit more with it
anyway i hope that answers/explains the rationale for these decisions.
