Universal Promotion

Post by Mit »

For those of you world owners who don't know yet.. we're planning on doing a bit of proper promotion of the game around about the start of december. This will include a proper press release to various websites and game news type places, a post to the main mailing list and a mention of the new stuff in a UK games magazine. With any luck (and maybe a few more finished features) we'll hopefully encourage a healthy bit of growth in our little community - hopefully meaning more players for your worlds.

somebody had mentioned about it to me in game, sounds good.

does the site have enough bandwidth though?
i remember jan last year when their was only a 2 page add in one magazine and the site ran out of bandwidth.
if its going to be in a bunch of different places, then it might need lots more. especially with how much better it looks.

last time we ran out it was on one site with 5G/month download, and that included both webpage and downloads in one single address place.
Ive currently got it set up so that the webpage and download site have 10G/month each.
Last month stats where 2G on website and 5G on downloads.
If we get hit a lot, the download bit would reach limit first, and in that case i'll add new links to any download places that can store it. If the website reaches the limit, its on a redirect so it can be copied to one of my spare accounts within a few hours.
If it got really really busy, i'll have a word (& probably a transaction or two) with the webhosts and get some extra bandwidth included. We're a valued customer after all :], and thanks to the donations you've all sent we could afford to pay that little bit extra to keep the site open.

my sites bandwidth is always available for you to use if you need it. no clue what the bandwidth limit is though, it doesen't say anywhere.

could also set up a website on my home pc to allow people to download directly off my comp if needed. would be marginally slower though since i only have about 30kb upload, although i have seen it spike at 40 and 50kb per sec

in any extreme scenario, having a seperate torrent up might help ease a bit of it for the few gamers who know what the heck bit-torrent is.

ie: nearly every 13-21 year old who's total number of video games played equals more than one.

Regarding the extra bandwidth use we will got from people downlodaing the game when we start promotion, i'd suggest releasing the game in p2p networks and publishing links here.

One good thing those p2p stuff can do is transfering the bandwidth use to end-users :)

Actually i already did that with last version, here is the emule/edonkey link : ed2k://|file|GalaxyInstall0134.exe|6407108|FFC5F2334AE10ACBE965C73D2D98CF98|h=3T7FRBLZ6DLO55NTBUTSJ5ZRAO6X67ZI|/

BitTorent is another good medium, and its atualy being used my major companies and is more "legal" then most p2p networks considing there are no indervidual people to sue.

Altho was in the news that the creator of BitTorent is going to be sued. Wich I can't see is possable becasue what he made is just a file transferer... its up to the users what content is shared... so in esance mirosoft could be used for implementing FTP in web browsers ;)

the creator didn't intend for it to be implimented as a pirating tool in the first place, that's just - like ftp - one of the more popular uses for the application.

having legal self-made content distributed through any network is perfectly legal in newly every country afaik, which is what we'd be doing. it's simply the best bandwidth saving distributed downloader i know of, with the perk of having a decent sized userbase that would gladly take advantage of the faster downloads. a few folks sitting on a seed, and it'd all go down much faster than the web.

and yeah as you mentioned, it's employed by many legitimate businesses. blizzard games amoung them*.

http://www.legaltorrents.com/ also is a great lil' experiment with rss+torrents that contains only 100% legal torrents.

*me waits for crack about blizzard games.

If you just wanna store the files and have a nice download site, www.moonfruit.com is a great host (no bandwidth limits) true. Or I can do some free hosting, though you'd have to wait a few weeks b4 I can upgrade my bandwidth to 120Gb m/o. Only got 75Gb... 1.5Gb space, which is a raught :P ne ways, just offering a hand.

website is at http://www.g4techtv.com
from thier advertising page:

if not actual paid for advertising with them, thiers also thier forums that have almost 150,000 users and always over 100 people online, and the various shows that they air like Screensavers that review video games and probably handle thier content on thier own.
