Chapter 5 building an economy that works

Post by DevilsAdvocate »

Citizens, at the moment there is no new money coming in to the community. Charle dont pay anything, no exports, so the money in the game is all there is and will be unless we ALL do something about it.

The only item that will make slow but steady progress is GOLD. But dont be greedy or we all die.
2 gold ore required to make 1 gold, so miner and worker all need 1 d each. Then refiner and worker needs 1 d each, which will then allow refiner to sell that NEWLY MADE gold to the bank to get 1 sheckle back into the community.

No other product or service can do this. Help us help you.

Looks like the gold rush is on, now that gold is worth 1s2d.
An extra 2d available on gold sales, so lets take a look at that:

A gold mine produces ore every 20 minutes at a cost of 2d just for the worker.
The mine sells at 3d, so mine owner can get something for his/her investment.

Forge then pays that 3d, and employs a worker at 2d per 20 minutes, But the forge owner needs 2 gold ore per gold, so he pays 6d for ore every 20 minutes and pays worker 2 still.
The forge owner then wants money from his/her investment, so adds 1d to cost of gold.
So with smallest wages possible the gold costs 9d to produce with the forge owner only getting 1d per 2 gold ore.

Now we need to know how to sort out getting the forge another 1d, and then decide who should be able to get the 2d increase that the forge owner and associated staff can make between them.

Should it be the worker, who is already getting twice what the mine owner and forge owner gets? Should it? And if that forge worker does not get to the gold fast enough to sell it at an outstanding 3d per gold profit should people be abused?

If the miners stop bringing gold to the forges where bad mouthed greedy player works, then the greedy player will not get any work, and it evens itself out quickly, with business closures again.

The high scores show who has the most wealth, keep an eye on it, its interesting to hear someone being abusive when his wealth is moving up real fast, just because he missed getting one shipment of refined gold to sell, even when the ore brought to his work place more than made up for that one shipment, being it was 5 times the amount that would have been there otherwise.

Lets renegotiate first, call names later, and start to be a little more adult, after all it is only a game, and we are but pixels on a screen.

That the workers makes 2x as much as the owner, in pretty much every building,
you don't think that's by design?

where bad mouthed greedy player works,
You're trying to justify your backstabbing by calling the most generous player in Aramathea GREEDY?

You "work" 2 forges, (put ore in, buy gold to sell at 1s5d profit per shipment to the bank)
and while i (quite mining job to) take a job at the 3rd, to make some extra cash, YOU snatch the gold from under my nose,
dare to call ME greedy?

That kinda snatching is against TU etiquette,
like - force-stocking a building (from which you did not buy)
while the owner is online/active -,
but i guess a noob like you doesn't know that yet.

I came to Aramathea with 2000 net worth, now down to 900 because i am GREEDY?
Probably half your networth came from me.

Seems you are very good at finding fault in others,
have a look at a mirror, slaveowner.

Ask Clwon -6s per harvest making Hay-,
or Bijou, Blaze or Tom how greedy i am.

I don't want YOU to profit from ME,
that's not greedy, it's personal,
i don't let slaveowners (paying their farmworker 6 d per harvest and lowering bread price just for him) take advantage of me,
and your ranting is not going to change that.

You're not running over me, and i don't need your approval.

Monkey at the helm

Post by jazno »

Very Long Winded
Ok wouldn't post but feel I have to because devil is pretty much talking about what every middle income earner is saying and I happen to be one of those slave owners mention in clems post and by all honesty I don't know by the post if he thinks devil is me heh.

Employee Pay Table
Ok let me first make a statement that employee making 2/3 of what employer makes is just silly (can't use better descriptive words on this forum). It is a simple risk reward equation. The employer takes all the risk and the employee does what exactly... apply? True we are forced to have employees for every situation and even if the employer has the skill he can not do the work himself but does that justify the employee owning the primary share of the business.

I will use my stable for many examples because I am more familiar with it. The employer must put forth the capital to have the skill to produce or buy the building. In the case of many buildings there is some condition you must over come to produce finished material for example you can not put hay into your own stable, someone has to sell it to you. If you have an employee that you trust and that will do this for you then maybe his is worth a bit more but no where near the 2/3 mark. In many situations your employee is paid so much while producing and less while not. So in most situations this factors out the so much d per 10 mins and not overwelm the employer. In the case of the stable you pay your employee anytime there is a horse in your stable or being raised.

Sidenote- Talking of greed I once offered an employee making 5s a day (which was too low I admit) that I would give him 10s for every horse sold to make up differance so not to be made to quit the buisness. He refused and insisted on making 15s a day while he was selling his own horses at a stable across the street for 10s less. Employees being what they are I was forced to live with it or close shop eventually I chose to fire him luckily I got a new employee.

The only time the risk/reward is taking out of the equation until recently was mining. You produced gold so as long as you were producing more then you were paying your employee there was very little risk until we have been introduced to the fact that the exchange rate can be adjusted so mine owners can now make less money unless adjusted by forge owners. Mine owners and forge owners are the only ones paid exclusively in gold. Mine owners pay there employees d for gold ore and then sell gold ore to forge. So with the recent decrease in value of gold unless made right by forge owners by paying more for ore and selling it higher in exchange both are looking at decrease in revenue.

The biggest problem with our current economy is the instant knee jerk reaction towards current events. One example is that if miners make 14s a day that every employee should make 14s a day or close to. This is the case eventually but why should farm owner/bakery/miller be put out of business instantly or called a slave owner without any kind of adjustment. Honestly I absolutely refuse to run a business and give 2/3 of my profit (or not profit it don't matter they want their money) to an employee. If someone wishes to become a partner and work out splitting the profit and cost I would be more then willing to listen. Our economy does need to work to get everyone close to the 14s a day so there are more people doing other jobs outside of mining but I could offer 20s a harvest to a farmer then pay them once and sit on field till I get my money back or work the field at a decent amount to keep producing and bringing up the wages as the market adjusts. The only thing people paying outragious salaries have done have ran off any middle income earner so to have cornered the market for themselve while waiting for famine or necesity to make there insanity pan out. The game is not set-up to pay employees 2/3 of your business it has been made that way by the players.

Mr C,
Having taken 25 ores to the forge you work in, allowing YOU to make a HUGE profit, I bought 5 refined ore, and you think that is worth falling out over?
Did it really warrant the abuse? Check the code of conduct and YOU will see that YOU acted like a newb, and shot your mouth off without even noticing the amount of ore I had dropped off for YOU to work and make the profit.
So I grabbed 5 gold and made 3d a piece off them, whilst YOU got paid for working all twenty five of them and had the sale on the ones I did not attempt to get. So YOU are out of pocket how?

You have had lots to say about it, but now people know the raw truth that you did benefit from it in a BIG way, perhaps they will realise that some people are just power and money mad in this game, and out for themselves and to hell with the others.

Grow up, you are supposed to be a man and a veteran player. Such people would not usually act the way you have, but hey ho it takes all sorts to spoil a game and your efforts fall far short of the mark. Until the epsiode earlier I had backed you regardless of your pathetic claims to be helping people with 6S per crop when crops are not selling. Did you forget that your worker does not get paid when your own poor judgement failed to bring him work?

So please lets keep it civil. You and your in game employer obviously do not want the trade brought to you, so I will not bother, and I suspect others who have seen and read the rubbish you have spouted will do the same.

You are not generous, you are fake. If you were generous you would never have started such a lot of rubbish by acting like a spoilt child after I brought you more profit than the few golds I took back with me, so who was generous? The baby crying over a few gold, who claims to pay wages when there is no work coming from those jobs, or the person who actually did take work to others and give them the profit?

END OF DISCUSSION.

i know Feebs is devils Laywer.

On that side note,
it takes 1 day for a horse to breed at 5s pay per day = 5 s per horse,
so your numbers are just wrong.
You starve your farmer for 1s2d per harvest so your hay only costs you 1.5d x 6 =1s per horse,
i was working for you as hostler, and got 3s wages while breeding your first horse
the cost you had on breeding that first horse was 4s, let's round it of to 5s

What's worst in this story I bought your OVERPRICED horse
or else you wouldn't have sold it at all,
gave you 45s in pure profit,
in other words 900% profit on your investment,
and then you sack me because i want fair wages.
(If there is no worker, production is probably reset, you cost yourself half a horse, if not more by doing that)

Oh boohoo if you pay 15s in wages and 3s in hay, per 50s horse, you "only" make 37s profit on a horse,
and now this bad guy sells for 30s so you make less profit.
Guess what, you still make more profit then i do if you sell for 30s,
because your farmer is a slave.

Untold story:
That first barn you build, cost you 5s in wood,
i bought it for 50s and demolished it,
another 45s =900% profit I GAVE YOU.

And here you are with the friggin audacity to call me greedy and trying to ruin your business.

If you going to tell story,
tell the whole story and tell it right.

2nd part on that side note,
i pay my hostler 15s per day so he makes a few d more then a miner,
i call that fair, and i don't want him to leave because he is underpaid,
on top of that, i pay the alfalfa farmer 6s per day per harvest,
that's 5x the wages you paid.
Plus i pay for the use of the barn 1d extra per hay, (Barn which i build for 5s and sold to Clwon for 1s)
making the cost per horse roughly 20s,
and i sell horses for 30s, 'cos i think that's a fair price,
a mere 50% profit
and what do you know,
the hostler who works for me gets 5s more per horse then i do.

I gave someone a house to share with me for 1s, i don't use it,
rented Clwon the store so he can sell hay and seeds,
and I also sold 1 horse for 1s,
oh boy, put me on the floggin post for being so greedy.

The only thing you and feebs are right in,
is that i voice my justified indignancy in a strong manner.
Luckily i see that i have room for improvement.

Any further complaints?

Parable:
I tell feebs i'm going to have a cup of coffee,
it's too hot, so i wait till it cools off,
and just when it's the right temperature, he snatches it off the table and drinks it,
then when i call him a sack of sh** for doing that,
the only comment he makes about it = that i am bad mouthed and greedy.

No sir, you have bad manners.
Do you behave in a restaurant that way?

And where Mr Feeble is most wrong in all places,
is that he thinks this is a bunch of pixels interacting.

No, we are people, the pixels are just a representatation,
we play this game together
we are not your property, private pixels on your computerscreen and it's OK to snatch things from under their nose,
and in NO WAY, is it your place to state it's the END OF DISCUSSION.

Who do you think you are here?
Think you're my dad or something?

2 of those noobs still wet behind the ears,
playing this type of world for the first time,
trying to tell people (not just me) who play this game for up to a decade that they don't know what they're doing.

What's wrong with this picture?

Ok Im leaving this just how I took it out. I did not change anything from orifinal post but edited before it was viewed because I did not want to make it overly personal but copied it because i knew it would be needed. In case this isn't relevenat to all your rants clement I appologize because I'm done reading your foolishness and only read first paragraph.

Future rebuttals:

So in hopes of not posting on this subject for awhile will deal with the hatred sure to come my way.

I appreciate that you bought and made the bank and you greatly progressed the game at that point but then almost have set it back with running most people out of the business they have planned.

I am glad you paid insane prices for items I was selling in the hopes that someone would be goofy enough to buy them in paticular I thought no one would be crazy enough to buy a barn for 50s I honestly never planned to sell it. While not doubling my net worth you did take it up considerable. While I do appreciate the great amount you donated it does not mean you own my soul and dealing with you as an employee more then makes up for it.

A blacksmith is paid a wage I believe. So how is it that they are the only ones that are entitled to buy the gold produced at the forge. In the case of other forge owner he actually tells those selling gold to him to buy the finished product so as to make a little extra and help him out.

In the case of selling clay to your pottery yes I did it once and you got very upset about it so I'll never do it again. I explained the circumstance to you and I did not fill it I put 10 or 12 in it don't remember. I don't know if you know this but there is a feature to quit buying and I think calling someone a newb even if it wasn't me you were referring to when there are what 40 people total with characters is a bit much. We don't all have your excessive knowledge of chapter 5 so you will have to excuse our ignorance.

I was a slave owner. I did have a farmer working for me for 1s a harvest and how many other farms work on that same principle until mining become a hit. I did raise my wages as wheat prices went up. No I did not raise my wages to match miners because I'm not paying 6s to a farmer (still below miners) then if I'm lucky and price stays up get 8s when I plough/plant and harvest the thing myself.

P.S.
I know this has probally made the richest person in game hate me just a little bit more if that is possible. I have tried to be as reasonable as I can in this response with such a low population I think it is bad form for there to be so much anger addressed at anyone playing this game. Most of us are here because we truely enjoy the game and wish for it To go on and keep advancing and to help mit and those working with him. While I disagree with some peoples' idea of this economy I hope that is were it can stay. I do not mean you should not go out of your way to not do business with me thats fine but I would like to keep it somewhat unhostile when much of the time I'm on there are like 3 or 4 on too.

You misrepresent the situation to try to show yourself to be mister wonderful.

When did you last give your worker 6S per harvest when you haven't grown any crops for a while ? 6S from no crops is not 6S its deception, because there is not any 6S being made to pay them. Perhaps you forgot the simplest of things, no work equals no pay, yet you want people to believe you are a fair trader, keeping an unpaid worker in bondage.

The forge you worked at was sold 25 gold ore by me just before I noticed that the refined gold was ready to be sold to your bank. And as the worker you made nothing from those 25 or the refined gold you made from them? We all know you did, so stop the pretence please !!!!

Dry your eyes, and move on. Crying after your deceptions have been discovered makes you look like an idiot, and others in the game may be put of by your ridiculous manner.

Let me summarize.
You call me bad mouthed, greedy, fake, childish, deceptive, crying, ridiculous and idiot.

Why don't you add "overracting", or is that included?

Oh no wait Quote Feeble
Lets renegotiate first, call names later, and start to be a little more adult,
so i guess you still have to start on the namecalling.

I paid my farmer 6s for 3 harvests, now the wheat lies idle in the farm as i have no other place to put it,
you want to make that my fault?

I will not dignify your nonsense comments and insults with any further response.

Jazno,
i don't hate you at all,
i find your comments fair with a misunderstanding here and there.

As for the brickery,
I buy clay @ 1d, to allow those who buy bricks to restock, so they get a refund on the price they paid for bricks,
if they don't, then i allow new players with no money to stock it,
so they get some money, maybe get another skill. (i don't have to do that, my horse is fast enough to restock most of it myself)
This lowers my profit from 3d per brick to 1d per brick.
@ 2d wages, i can't lower the price any further while still buying clay.

I did tell you i was harsh in my wording, *bit your head off)
but i want to leave this opportunity there for the really poor players like the DoG brothers ;-)
not for those with 100s who want to increase their wealth.

As for the blacksmith... i had a job as a miner,
left that job specifically to work for the forge for an hour orso
for 2 reasons.
1 to make me some extra money selling gold to the bank,
2 to help Blaze produce a bit

Reason 1 got taken away, and even got reversed,
i found myself making a slaveowner richer.
and reason 2 wasn't strong enough to make up for that reversal.

Well, what can I say?
I apologise for offending people by my actions, my words and the raw truth of the situation.

I am not good at taking insults when I first awake, and having been told that I stole from a game, lied to another player, and was then told to "go away" rather impolitely, I felt I also needed to vent my thoughts, especially as the person who was abusive logged off the game just after making his accusations.

To most this will look like a playground squabble, to others just a puerile over-long thread on the forum, between two village idiots. So perhaps I should make my way to This Town as soon as possible because there aint room for two of us in one village.

If my sense of justice was too extreme and it upset anyone, that was not my intention. I have always been outspoken, especially when injustices are done, and can not stand to hear people blowing their own trumpets when they are clearly not doing what they claim to be.

The following is my final word on the matter, sorry all other players and Mit for any offence caused.

Can I come to This Town, or do I need to build Jeopardy?

He actually doesn't get it and he actually thinks he's right and being wronged.

What he should do, is go to the angels palace,
wait till a hells angel orders a beer,
and before the Hells angel has a chance to drink it,
snatch the glass from under his nose, drink the beer,
then say:

" this wasn't yours, you didn't need it, you're already drunk anyway"

See if he likes what happens next,
and after waking up from the coma,
see how the H.Angels' reaction compares to the "bad mouth" he got ingame.

Well, it's not safe to do such a thing to a Hell's Angel.
indeed,
but it's ok to do something like that to a bunch of pixels on your computerscreen right?

And of course i overreact,
how else is anyone going to get through that thick self righteous skull.

Maybe i should have said:
"Dear Sir, that's not the way we do things around here",
i doubt very much that that would have gotten his attention.

Oh come now crapski, you know the rules. The harder you work and the richer you become, the more money you need to give to those that don't work as hard to get money and then complain about their lack of it. Woo for communism :p

Feeble, the money thing doesn't have much to do with being greedy. It has to do with experience and knowing what to build and when to build it. Knowing how to predict what people will do in the game and being able to predict when to enter and leave a market.

There are many players (such as crapski) who have played the game for many *real* years before mit changed it to what it is now. Back when there were economies consisting of 50+ different buildings and 100+ different items. We also couldn't unstock stuff from one building and add it to another, you HAD to have somebody buy and sell to move the product or HAD to buy it from somebody else to manually add it to your building. There were many items that required more then 5 buildings to make and some that needed more then 10 buildings. For example, to make a vehicle you could need to make use of 13 different buildings: oil drill, fuel refinery, power plant, ore mine, metal foundry, chemical plant, water pump, cattle yard, grain farm, fert fac, rubber farm, vehicle parts fac, vehicle fac.

The current economy is a *very* simple and easy economy compared to what many have learned on and these people find it very easy to quickly advance. It isn't that people are being greedy, it is that there are many players who are veterans at the game and can 'read' the economy like it's a book and predict how players will play the game so they know what to build and where to build it to maximize potential profits.
