Well in any event as things are for now, i dont see anything limiting this from going open source from my personal point of view as clearly there is no monetary driven factor behind it the few bucks from the handful of subs arent even covering the electric bills for a 486dx2 which i doubt is used for the server ^^.zaroba wrote:Much longer?
All the current subscribers subscribed seeing the game as it is now.
The game became 'merely a chat room' before the option to became a paying subscriber was introduced.
So as it is im quite sure mit is making a loss on the whole thing and as long as there is no intent of professionalizing it i dont see why this couldnt go open source.

Zaroba is right. id say at least 90% of the subscribers have at least a 3-5 year tenure around here anyway. People just need to chill. Go outside or something =). It's nice out here in Tx anyway =). Its not like anyone went out to the local Best Buy and bought a box game for 50 bucks and installed it just to find chapter 3 sitting idly. Besides, i can see an open source MMO becoming chaotic quick. Quite realistically, it would end up being a bunch of copies of the same game server running on everyones computer and probably some words changed here and there on the interface because thats all anyone would know to do pretty much =). I'll take 'Mit's pace' over that any day .
There are many situations where money has nothing to do with ones actions.Keyalha wrote:So as it is im quite sure mit is making a loss on the whole thing.
Pretty much everything entertainment and hobby related falls into this.
Even if he is loosing money on running and maintaining the website and the server (and has been since he started the game in 1999), what difference does it make if he enjoys doing it? As fooli put it some time ago, the game is like Mits 'pet project'. It's likely just something he does for fun and as a hobby.
I've run tuwr.net for almost 10 years now, it's hardly any use at this point and wasn't much use for several years before mit changed the game. It's been nothing but a loss financially speaking yet I continue to pay for the webhost and domain because I like having the site.
Many long term players have invested a lot of money into the game. Not necessarily via direct donations, but indirectly by running servers, making models, making websites, helping players, etc. We don't do it with the goal of bringing any type of professionalism into it, we do it for the joy of doing it while fully aware that we will never get back the time and money we put into helping advance the game.
Dont get me wrong i think its a good thing if people support it i just say that when there is no financial majority involved ( like mit living of the subs which we are both saying is not happening any time soon ) there would be no loss for him when he goes open source.zaroba wrote:There are many situations where money has nothing to do with ones actions.Keyalha wrote:So as it is im quite sure mit is making a loss on the whole thing.

Its a completly different thing if mit would disagree with how open source works ( i dont know his opinion on open source tho ) or has any sound reason not to do it.

Looks like you die a smartass.Im 73 years old now and im almost dead. Can I spend my wesdom points anywhere beafor I go or I just die as a smart ass ?
As far as the open source direction goes. Mit tried setting up a somewhat open source thing for the game. We didn't have access to everything, and not many people messed with it. You can ask to join the coder's corner if you want, Mit might let you in. Really, we need people to make a variety of models so that when worlds open up again, they have fresh models to work with.
In the end, this is Mit's child, and he's not going to hand it off to strangers.
