Space Invisibility Bug.

Post by Baladin »

We all wanted to fight today but because of this damn bug which seems to have only worsened we cant see any of the players in space. There was around 11 of us on zoric and we all agreed to a space fight, however everyone seemed to only be able to see hunter but no one else. I hope this bug can be resolved soon as its one of the things dragging this game down for the majority of players who want to play space.

Note the date of the post. Note the small number of replies :]

It's not "a bug" that has "worsened". The code hasn't changed... so if it's getting worse, something else has changed.

As I've explained in other forum posts it's a tricky one to pin down: if wireless seems to make it worse, that might help us find the cause (I don't think there's anything particularly different about connecting with wireless, except maybe it's a problem sensitive to packetloss or something).

Space comms is mostly peer to peer: in other words, you're all communicating with each other's clients directly. Which means invisibility could be any number of things related to your specific networking/internet setups, and almost certainly has nothing to do with the way your client communicates with the galaxy server, and the code that governs all that stuff.

Post in the thread above and give us the information we ask for... and maybe we'll stumble across the solution* (if mit has any time to think about it).

f

* There are only two definite solutions, that I'm aware of. 1) Mit rewrites all the networking code 2) we change the entire game setup, host everything on a gigantic server with a big fat net connection, and charge you all to play so we can pay for the hosting costs. They're both at the improbable end of the probability curve. By asking for all this boring ISP and networking information I was hoping to spot some sort of pattern that would lead to a simple fix. Like, you're all using firewalls that need configuring to enable space to work, or something. I'm not really an expert, but in mit's absence it's all I could think of :]

I'm posting this becouse it may give insite into the problem. I've NEVER had a prob with the invisability bug. I have a 2001 Gateway with no upgrades, use cable internet, and have McAfee virus protection. Someone may be able to deduce from that info what the source of the problem is. Atl least I hope. I guess having the cheap low rent system paid off for once :D

I don't think wireless is a problem either. People in game were wondering if maybe it was wireless couldn't see wireless, and viceversa. I am on wireless, and I could see jwnb, who also is on wireless. I'm also guessing the problem is not with "wireless can't see cable and viceversa", because I could also see Cyborg, and he is on cable.

It seems to be a problem with only certain wireless routers,we were using a netgear here and we had the invisibility problem ,as soon as we switched to the linksys we're using now most people became visible.

ok im gonna do a little test:
the computer i usualy use for the universal is a acer laptop with vista and macafee security centre,

im currently downloading the game onto my g.f's old p.c which has win xp and ntl netguard security but im still using the same wireless router sooooo,

this test should enlighten me to the fact of wether it is the router, or the firewall, windows version etc, :)

Worked with gk8000 and Mit a while back trying to help them figure this out.Mit made some progress ,but apparently it boiled down to router issues.I've been able to see most people since switching routers. When I was on the netgear router I was able to see some people by going into the router and setting it to DMZ,(not recommended, got a lot of trash on my machine every time I did)
