Customisable planet skin
Customisable planet skin
In the next version (0.44.0) i'll be taking advantage of devi's lovely new http downloader stuff to have all the planet textures (i.e. the ones seen in space) unique and stored in a central repository on gameislands.net. (do i hear the distant sound of hedge muttering 'ohh... finally...'? :] )
Soo.. if you've got a particular texture you'd like to use for your planet, link it here or drop it to me on email. If you want to try out your texture first, try overwriting Data\Space\biplaneworld.jpg and seeing what it looks like on biplaneworld.

then if the world gets a reset and changes alot, the texture could also be changed to reflect the new design.
or just have it possible for world owners to upload the pics
Yea that'd be nice, I was just thinking that when i read the topic the first time.
I was just fooling around with some graphics stuff I have. I followed the directions above (putting it in as biplaneworld.jpg), both in the Data/Space and Data/Space/Planets folder, and neither would work to show over the usual biplaneworld skin.
I figure it's got something to do with the system being reconfigured a bit in later patches/releases. I'm going to try a few things, see what happens.. but anyway, the question... what would be the best way to test a new skin without having to load a whole world? Basically, want to overwrite one to test new graphics (hopefully for use with unknown planets or somesuch), with what I can do.

Okay, figured out the problem and now doing some tinkering, trying different sizes and such. Some things are coming out a bit pixelated, but I like some of the things I can do. Now I'm just curious... is there some way to have other "stock" images for the Unknown planets? Being a trader, it'd be nice to have ones that don't all look like the moon.
Is it possible to have a few (like, several) different skins for the unknown worlds? I could do a few without much trouble and they won't be really huge for people to have to load. Thoughts?

Not at the moment for different looks of unknown planets so far, at least that's what i can tell. Although i can imagine that defining planet's to be textured due to what they are (i.e. lifeless, private military etc) would be possible with a little editting of the game. But you would still be getting repeats of the same planet if you had 2 of the same planets.
