ok - he's hardly played in 6 months because of various issues - so how is he supposed to know you've only been playing a couple of days?
when he was playing, most of the space combat stuff wasn't figured out, so he's as new at that as you. how's he supposed to know you're new to space combat, rather than bad at it?
I appreciate your frustration nostro, but this was "wrong place at wrong time" for both of you, not a deliberate act against a new player for a laugh.
defending a frieghter ?
Sonro wrote:on a side note, maybe one "improvement" or addition would be to have semi- manual targets - in that a player has to turn on targetting (via f-key or icon click) rather than it automatically locking on a ship in range as is currently the case. that way newer players aren't panicking about being attacked all the time. if your ship is warning you that someone has locked on, you know its deliberate and have the choice to stay and fight or get out of the way
Yeh, something I forgot to mention. We need a fast and easy way to select targets, both ships and planets/stations. It's too hard to fly with the keyboard and hit the tiny lil player name with the mouse while managing countermeasures, lasers and missiles. And to target a station or planet, you have to F5 and click the planet name again, which makes it hard to find somewhere you can run to.
Other things I noticed:
- If you fire a missile and the player's behind you, you can't see the missile trail (or maybe the trails don't always display, I dunno) - so you can't be sure you've actually fired it
- missile firing sounds are flaky, contributing to the above
- if you're out of missiles there's no message displayed when you fire. Needs an out of ammo report and onscreen display of weapon inventory
- whenever you try talking to me my client falls over :)
Nostradamus: we're really sorry you had a bad time, but don't take it out on other players. As I said, it's just a game: Chezzie's one of our longest-standing players, and he was trying out the new combat stuff for the first time. You can't blame him for just using the game features we've included. You can, however, blame the dev team for not having finished it and made it all balanced and fair.
As I said above, though: this game is beta, and we're changing stuff like this all the time. Sometimes people benefit and it seems unfair; sometimes people lose out, and it also seems unfair. Please don't give up! All of your experiences help us make the game better for everyone. You might be annoyed but your experience is really valuable and your reports really helpful. So thanks - and we'll try to make it better as soon as we can..

I'm still not sure I agree with any of this, but as Mit explains in the thread linked above, it's part design, part testing the water... while it's unfortunate when players like nostra are at the sticky end of someone's big laser-toting cruiser, it's a) kind of necessary to test this stuff in what is still a beta environment, and b) well it's just a game innit
just tested lasers in protected space wiith a very helpful, but slightly confused newbie UKgam3r, who for his assistance received 1 new tech from my cargo to sell at syv, giving him a financial boost.
Lasers do work in protected space!
(BTW - fooli/mit ust got over the coms that the jetisonned cargo vanished before he could get to it - any chance he could be reimbursed with tthe cash equiv (6200cr) - take it from my overloaded cash if necc. very helpful noob. )
I apologise in advance cos most of this is for mit
i spend quite a bit of time in the zion sys and c u often nostradarmus. If u read the chat u will c that i answer most peeps questions. A large part of this game is asking peeps for help and advise so maybe u will try in future . And no in advance, i wont say where my ship came from (most popular question).
As for travelling to every system, ive done it, as have a few others. Firstly u need a good ship and an l40 to do it(playing only a few days isnt long enough).secondly, as u move further away from the "home" systems u r very unlikely to meet another player (more chance of bumping into an alien ).
A combat zone is a great idea, but in the meantime feel free to help me organise regular get togethers like on saturday, i dont want it to be a one off.
The bounty system still seems to b not working properly.Ive only killed peeps with a bounty lately, but my own keeps going up. A lot seemed to come from smithy953 and chezzie (who i killed twice nostradarmus, if it makes u feel better ). I believe i am now the galaxies "most wanted" which is a tad unfair for bounty hunting and protecting newbs, but i can live with it
its a good idea nostradarmus to gather a few like minded peeps and go somewhere and work out how many missiles ur ship can take etc, i still do it now when we get updates.
I like the power choice idea, nothing worse than being a sitting duck while someone pounds u with missiles.Defenders definitely have the upper hand in fighting at the mo, uve never had it so good. i wouldnt like to c traders be able to star out of a system though, kills would be impossible. I think it would help if i could at least turn my ship to face my aggressor so that i could fire back, cos at the mo u cant after a missile strike.
Could we not have a pop up page that appears as soon as u leave the station for the first time in game that states a. f12 while under attack automatically loses ur cargo and b. read forums or ask players in chat for help. Because as stated earlier its human nature not to read help info in a game
How about a timer on new players ie u r invunerable to attack for the first 20 hours of spaceplay. This prob seems to lose more new players than any other. 20 hours is long enough to chat to peeps and learn how the game works. We wouldnt get the nostradarmus prob then
Is it also poss for the default channel to be the "starsystem channel" ? I know when i started it was a very quiet day on main Often i try speaking to newbs and i believe this is y they cant talk to me.
Lastly one for fooli - If u insist on keeping on flying between me,chezzie and old cynic ur gonna get hull degradation

mainly for coolbiker
As you can see from my reply I did read your post .
it looks like I have gained certain reputation already (the nostradarums problem)
any how I had already worked out that i would need a L40 and good ship to visit every system , and of course know that it will take more than a few days . but thanks for the advice any how .
As per our chat , I have taken steps avoid conforntations altogether , there is little point in me "getting togther with other like minded peeps" for the following reasons :-
1. I have not come across any "like minded peeps"
2. I do not intend revealing in any detail my plans to aviod losing any more cargo to any one as they may turn to the "darkside" at some later date
3. it is irelivent to me how many missles my ship can take as once I am hit (should that unfortunatly happen again) and unable to put up any defence I will simply press F12 and drop my cargo (in the very unlikely event that I would be a carrying any) WAIT AN HOUR OR SO then return to inspect the damage
4. I treat every one as my enemy , it has been my experiance that friends are few and far between , I was robbed of all my money by some guy called steef on ZION BUT by then I was ready to move on .
once again though thanks for the advice

I'm sorry you feel that way about most players. I find that the people who regularly visit a world, such as coolbiker, zaroba, blingn, etc. on Zoric, are generally those who are serious about the game and care about its players. Steef is one of the few players who has been known to scam new players. Another tip is to refuse person-to-person deals made by players in the game. Players advertising new products or lower prices, I feel, are usually fairly innocent, except for maybe corporate piracy and conspiracy to destroy other competing companies. An exception would be if on a world where it is difficult to get around but someone you know has a good reputation and a good vehicle (such as an airliner) is offering flights to places. For instance, I am setting up a world (Emek) where most vehicles are difficult to get anywhere easily and safely. However, there is an airliner you can buy. This is the only vehicle that requires gas, and so gas is hard to find, and therefore expensive. A possible business to look into on that world would be offering flights to noobs. The airliner is easy to fly and easy to land, but very expensive to fly. It also has a max capacity of about 300 people. If you were offered such a deal, that would be worth accepting.4. I meant to say I treat everyone as my enemy until they prove trustworthy , I also should say that i go out of my way to help anyone new and sometimes give them money or stuff not just advice , I would never scam anyone like steef does let aone any noobs , I let one guy shoot me up a little near ZORIC today BUT has he had no shields I made no attempt to shoot him down although he thought I was going to as I approached him in my police fighter He only had a humble frieghter . He even claimed a victory after "escaping" into the nearest space station ! which was amusing .
BUT hey it is supposed to be fun ? I can spare the time

A reply of guilt: when i started SR i didnt think about how many players quit cuz of pirates but i know now cuz just about every other thread i read some noob player has been blown to bits by a elite ( Mostly SR members ) ive tried changeing the SR code of rules many times most members follow others dont i dont pirate as much i spend alot of time in a idle around zion with coolbiker thinking of ways to bring more players together to form clans for what ever reason they want many things have been said about SR but most true some false im not sure if i read this on another thread or post or maybe in game ( For pirates to get the best of traders find a few like minded ppl join as a team pirate or trade ) or ( Traders join together and form a clan same as pirates ) its working for SR so far but i cant control every SR member at all times ( SR rules are on the SR webby [url] www.SpaceRaiders.4t.com ) anyone not following the SR rules will be hunted down and killed many many times this is for members only allies have the free will to kill SR for breaking the rules or for a bounty over 300cr

i dont code at all so dont know how hard it would be but i think this might work to keep everyone happy.
Is it possible to make safe space so that only shuttles can use lasers there, and bounties non existent for these peeps until they upgrade their ship?
This way no newb loses any money or gains a bounty or legal status ( preventing them from joining the police guild at a later date as they progress through the game ) and mit still gets his combat in safe space.
The rest of us can still merrily carry on killing each other outside of fed space
