New Server Client Wrecked World

Post by onionguy92 »

I downloaded the new server client, thinking, okay, this new version will be sweet. So then, I had to uninstall my old client so the new one could install. However, then, when I boot up my world, I find it's been ravaged! All my towns are gone, a statue I put up is registered as a town, and all my non-default buildings are gone! When I open the Buildings.dat file to look at it, everything I've accomplished and set up is gone! I'm pretty sure all Windows files get backed up periodically, so I need to know how to retrieve my old settings and whether this was supposed to happen, and if Mit actually intended for this kind of thing to happen.

mmmmmmmmm... theres nothing (that i know of) new in the .4 client that would cause that kindof stuff particularly. I could perhaps understand if it happened when i'd completely changed the building record (or messaging) format or something, but theres really been nothing on those lines changed for a long while.
Whenever im developing a new client im always working on development worlds that are on older server versions etc, and ive not had any such problems with .4 on those worlds.

Im a bit worried that re-ninstalling the client might have caused the problem. The uninstall of the client shouldnt affect your world files, but.. well.. i dunno.. the installer prog might have got totally messed up in some way. (I didnt write it so im not sure what bugs or side effects it might have).

Anyway.. assuming the uninstall didnt completely delete all your world stuff in a horrible way, the first thing to do is to export an .isl of your current world (i.e go to the server's file menu and select 'export world') - its possible the data is all still there but just messed in some way, so we should get a snapshot of it now in case we need to return to it.

Next.. have a look in your server's Backups folder (Program Files/TheUniversal/Backups by default) - if you've had auto-backups enabled u might have a recent isl in there that u can re-use. If so, try importing it to your world and see if its any better.

Third.. have you updated your server program too? Though i didnt experience any problems with 0.50.4 client and older servers, its perhaps possible that just upgrading your server might help things.

Beyond that.. if the re-install is to blame, then id like to make sure you're not doing something a bit whacky like running 'TheUniversal.exe' and the 'UniversalWorld.exe' from the same folder. (TheUniversal.exe should be in a subfolder called 'Clients' - i.e Program Files\TheUniversal\Clients by default). Doing so could have horrible side effects which would mess up stuff royaly (as both the client and server will be trying to read from/write to the same files).

mmm... lemme know what u find out. Tho from the sound of it... I do hope you had autobackups enabled!

Well, as it turns out, my crappy Windows computer does not automatically back-up files. However, only my Weapons script, Welcome Image, and Buildings script were replaced. However, I did accidentally save a copy of the Buildings scipt to the wrong directory when I was first getting acquainted with the buildings editor. So I salvaged a bit. I'll have to rebuild my education system, residential buildings, some manufacturing stuff, the Food supply, and the Vehicle Manufacturing sequence. I'll have to redo the weapons script and the welcome image, but I was planning on doing that anyway. As a result, Emek will likely not be online for a week or two.

It's Emek, although it's not currently online while I try to rebuild some features. It's normally in M-209.
