If I remember correctly, the plan for cargo floating in space was for it to a very limited lifespan - 30 seconds, perhaps. It certainly won't be there when you return to a system*.

I've just tested jettisoning, and while it works (from the point of view that I now have less cargo) I couldn't see any cargo cannisters at all. So visible floating cargo might be broken right now.

However, because we don't have cargo scoops at the moment, it's all a bit pointless :) I'm not 100% sure but I don't think you can actually collect cargo in space in the current version. The only good reason to jettison cargo for now is to free up space for something else, I think - if, say, you can't sell it where you are and really want to buy something else instead.

* /game justification mode: cargo cannisters only contain enough power and shields and atmospheric support systems to preserve cargo for a very short amount of time. Cosmic rays and that, y'know.

/real reason: tracking hundreds of floating objects across a space the size of a system, making them persistent, and then multiplying that by the number of systems in the galaxy, would require a computer the size of a planet** and some serious bandwidth to communicate all that information to other players. I think (mit will need to confirm) that the plan is to make cargo persistent for a short amount of time in a limited region of space, as a sort of compromise.

Meh, if you're going to build a planet-size computer, at least make it think up some question :P
