Seems I have some extra money to do what I want with and I was thinking of donating some to the Universal. Don't have paypal, but can transfer with my CC. I did some searching on the forums about naming stars and planets with donations (one of the main reasons I do want to donate.. that and I enjoy the game way too much), but couldn't find anything definitive really except what is on the donation page.
How do we notify what we'd want a star to be named? I understand that it's random and all, and that's cool. How is it randomly chosen? Dice-rolled or something? Just curious.
Also, is there anything about naming a planet without putting a game on the planet? My programming with C is horrid, to say the least, and I don't really have the time or determination to put something together, but I think it'd be cool to name a planet after my fiancee and my niece (who enjoys watching the game, especially when I get attacked by pirates).
So, let me know. I got some money burning a hole in my pocket and I'd like to donate.
Donating
That sounds great, thanks, and glad you're enjoying the game.
If you make a donation and your donating account (CC or whatever) doesn't let you add notes there, just mail mit (at theuniversal dot net) telling him what you'd like to name.
I believe it's stars only: in theory, every world in the galaxy is up for grabs for players to use, and obviously they'd like to choose their own name too. I think stars are chosen randomly, but again, ask mit if you had something specific in mind. It's a informal process really - donation not a purchase - so it all depends on what's donated and how drunk mit is at the time :)
By the way: no programming knowledge is needed to make a world: that's kind of the point. It's probably just as convoluted and time-consuming a process as programming is, but you don't actually need to know any C: it's all done with in-game settings and a couple of editing tools. If you ask nicely you can often get an existing world owner to contribute settings and so on and basically make a copy of an existing planet. Bit dull (because it's nicer if they're all different) but that makes it even faster.
Anyway - get in touch with mit and maybe we'll all be flying around the Niece system or something in the future :]
Cheers,
f
