I have downloaded a few buildings from the UWR site, buildings I put into the building model file, etc.
I tried in both Client file and Data files.
However they are not showing up in the world editor.
The Bitmaps and the Models are supposed to show up in the Buildings Editor, right?
Another thing, part of my editor is not showing, or is cut off by the edges of the window.
For instance the line in the buidlings editor (far right)
Buildings available on yo
The button above that reads only: Export S (Maybe an 's' the last letter is cut in twain).
So what exactly do I need to do with models and bitmaps/jpegs (textures) for models if not put them in the model file (i.e. buildings into the bldg, vehicles in vehicles, etc)?

Yeh, buildings go in models/bldgs, vehicles in models/vhcls, weapons and trees and background models in models/objct, wildlife in models/misc...etc. And all in the server, not the client (so the correct folder is (for instance) TheUniversal/data/models/bldgs.
The relevant texture files also live in those folders.
However... in the case of buildings, there's an extra step you have to do. Before you can add buildings to your world, you need to set up a buildings.dat file, which you do with the buildings data editor. It lets you establish the characteristics of each building type on your world - what it's called, what it sells, and so on. So you can't "just have buildings" - they have to have a purpose, even if you use the buildings data editor to just make them all ornamentals that sell and produce nothing.
Once you've saved your bdat file - which lives in your server's /data folder - you go into the world server, go to the tools/buildings editor menu, and you should see the buildings you saved in the bdat, on the right hand side. (Actually, I've no idea why there are two lists there). Anyway, clicking a building on the right lets you change the model and texture that building type uses. Once you've done that you'll have them available for construction in your world.

Ok, I got the Building Data Editor.
I opened up the Building.dat just to have a look see.
There are 512 items.
The first column (Building Name) is written in, well, not English letters, some look Cyrillic (Russian) some are just thick | mixed in with some % > and other such symbols.
The second column (Building type) have a few English names, such as New Bank and Home – a few are the strange alien names (Since this is The Universe alien language should be expected I guess) Lots of “Invalid Building Type” and a few (null).
I didn’t save, I just exited the program.
Going back to the World Editor, selecting Buildings Edit getting my short list of buildings:
Town Marker
Home
Basic School
Fish market
Bar
Fuel stop
Oil Drill
In the left hand column the right hand column is yellow and empty. The box Use all Buildings is checked (default) – I have to uncheck that to get buildings to list in the right hand column.
Once I uncheck that I get a list of 17
1 ‘Town mar’
2 <none selecte
3 <none selecte
* Ditto to 17 *
The rest of the column is cut off.
A picture is worth a thousand words: http://www.geocities.com/dvdgstwrt2000/ ... 4541577671 I took screen shots, cut where needed. You will see what I mean about the strange language and what I mean about my editor being cut off.
Before I proceed I need to know if this is “normal” or if there is something wrong.
Thanks for all of your help.
(Edit: addition) I can open the Zion Building Dat file (the one for download) and I get english and its all nice and tidy. The error, I assume its error, is in my planet's file?

Do you have the line owner=[your name] in serverconfig.txt?
Otherwise, um... not sure what you're doing wrong. If you can see the buildings in the data editor, and the buildings.dat file they belong to is in the correct folder, and you've reloaded that buildings.dat file in the world server, then you should see the same list of buildings there, and you should be able to modify the models and textures. And then you can build stuff on your world. As in, you have to manually put buildings there, they don't just appear (just in case you didn't realise that).
It might be a broken install, perhaps. Can't think of anything else offhand, it's early.
Any bdat experts fancy helping out? This isn't my area of expertise (answers on a postcard to explain what, if any, area that might actually be :] )

From the image it just looks like the server window is getting all messed up - the 'change model' button should be at the bottom right of the dialog brought up on the server when u select "tools -> buildings". Your windows settings are screwing up the placement of the dialog and cutting that button off.
For now, you could fix it by changing the size of your text in the window bar. Right click your desktop, go to "Properties" then "Appearance" and the change the "Font Size" to "normal". ( I presume you have it on "Large" atm? )
Obviously, you may want to have your windows with really large fonts at the top - and i'll need to fix the server dialogs so it can cope with that without cutting off the buttons.

btw, the first image, of the buildings editor tool with all the messed up text, looks like you've tried to load either an old buildings.dat or one downloaded in the Clients folder. The copy of buildings.dat you get in the clients folder is sent from the server in a slightly different format to the one used by the editor, so you can not use it to create a file for your world. Sounds like you've sorted that bit out already, but anyway...
Yes it was set on large - a large screen needs large icons/etc.Mit wrote:From the image it just looks like the server window is getting all messed up - the 'change model' button should be at the bottom right of the dialog brought up on the server when u select "tools -> buildings". So I reduced to normal and get a thin enough sliver of the buttons on the bottom to now change the textures. Can't see the lettering on the buttons... but it works.
Thanks.
as owner, it shouldnt matter about towns - the normal limits for where to build don't apply. Are you getting nothing at all in the list when you select the "build" option?
Have you connected your world to a planet in the gal, btw? If so, what is its name? If im around ill pop on and go thru some of these things with ya.

I got them all to show now. I don't know what I did. Now its a matter of applying texture/models thus far nearly everything is "store"Mit wrote:as owner, it shouldnt matter about towns - the normal limits for where to build don't apply. Yes I loaded the world onto a planet by accident, before I knew that crashing into an unnamed world would result in your world ending up there LOL.
(Scratch that, we lost power (thus connection) while I was away and somebody took the planet)
I got one town plinth (New Sirius) installed.
Vehicles that work so far:
#1 person
#3 Bi-plane
#4 Truck
#5 Porche
#6 Boat
#10 Hovercraft
Just wondering, can I move the star port?
Edit: location of T'muiria
