Terribly confused Newb here

Post by DasFlo »

Hey all,
I can't seem to get started really.
I did as was suggested in some threads here - find a cargo ship for under 100 and then start trading water. Here's where the trouble begins. 1) I can't seem to navigate my ship really. It will just roll (so i can get it to turn left or right if i pull up after rotating to the right to go right etc) but I can't seem to get the thing to just plain steer. Also I'm on a Laptop, using page up/down for throttle is a pain.

I had to go to another planet/station (station I think) to get cheap water, however the only way to get there I could figure out was "steering" my ship in the direction of the station on my HUD and go there, however I had an ETA of over 30 mins. This can't be the only way to travel between planets inside a system? The Finite Imp. drive didn't list the place I wanted to go to.

Also I landed on a planet, where I seemed to be supposed to somehow learn skills, build stuff, somehow make money (?) or something. There was no one to talk to and ask my questions, it said there were 5 people online alltogether. Also upon pressing "d" in an attempt to move (I configured the game to use WASD in that F1 mini menu) the game crashed and burned without any error message, that's when I decided I might need some help.

Soooooooo..... Might somebody please help me to get started...?

First of all, hold down home to go faster. Space trading is long and boring, I didn't bother.

Learn skills and stuff - dunno the world.

But I solved 1 problem.

Yes you did. Thanks ;)

So, you didn't bother with the space section of the game. Ok. The problem is, I don't really know what else to do - since there doesn't seem to be any real goal to the game (in Eve that would be [money, good ship, good equipment, skills, guild etc = power = goal]).

The overall goal of the game in space is to make as much money as possible, upgrade your ship and explore the galaxy however you see fit:

...and to do this while we gradually add more features (there's a galactic quest, for example... more will follow).

On worlds: depends where you are. Every world has different rules. Click the help icon (?) when you're on each world and read the instructions. If the world doesn't have any decent help guides, post on the forum and flame the owner :)

Ok,
so I managed to sell some water. I'm rich now, since i own about 6 cr.
I also landed on a planet called "mechzone" or something. To my amazement I was joined by someone, who explained some things to me. I also managed to blow up his mech, which might or might not have had something to do with him feeling sorry for me.
Unfortunately the guy was gone after he asked me to join him im space, so possibly I asked just a bit too much. Also my game has started crashing whenever I try to connect to some "republic" planet. All in all it was propably a success, since I managed to verifiy that this is indeed an online game with other people than me playing. I can't seem to get anyone to talk to me in space, though.

So if I get this right, the space game and the several planets don't have anything to do with each other. Everything I may or may not accomplish on a given planet will only count for that one planet. It is all a bit confusing. Oh, and any help on that whole steering issue yet? I can't open any control options.

Different rather than confusing, I'd say. Yes, you're right: while you have one persistent galaxy character, you basically lead separate existences on worlds. Each world is a separate server, which is a strength in that we can (in theory) have mech worlds, and farming worlds, and subspace worlds, and so on, and you can basically choose to play wherever you like without jeopardising your space character. But it's a bit different and not "realistic" (though nor is space travel, so... wotever :)

I believe the plan at some point in the far-distant future is to tie in world economies with the galactic economy, but at the moment there's no link, money-wise. There will be a link in terms of gameplay, though - still work in progress I think. Basically by doing well on worlds you can earn galactic prestige, which will let you do things in space (special items, ships etc).

Controls are classic Elite controls in space. You rotate, pitch and roll, accelerate and deccelerate. That's it. You'll get used to it... use the system map to set targets and just follow the arrow :)

as for worlds with more players, Imperial often has several people on it, as does zoric.
zion used to always have players on it, but it's died off a bit in the past month, but still occasionally has a bunch of players aswell.

to get to them fast, you could try hitting the 3rd button down in the space game, it opens a list of worlds that it will instantly teleport you to. don't believe what the list says about ionline/offline or players though. it often is inaccurate since IPs change at times and it doesen't immediatly update the list.

You might find it easier to use a joystick. In the game press F1 for small mode and select the joystick setup option. I use a Thrustmaster gamepad and it works great.
