chat server is up again... for this one we can officially blame microsoft ...
appears the last time i updated the server with a windows update which was xmas eve, windows update set itself to automatically update (i have it set to normal) and it did a restart then opened a dailog box saying your updates have been sucessful which prevented the broadband connection to work :/
so there ya go its all their fault
ive just tried to remote connection to the gal machine but its refusing vnc so we will have to wait for the evil ruler of the galaxy (fooli) to do that

Another fine response. Ok, just to clarify: the galaxy's been up since I got home and fixed it a couple of days ago: there's been no downtime at all since then, and various people have been connecting fine (about 1500 so far).
Which leaves, as possible explanations:
- some weird galactic bug we're not aware of
- some weird network or system issue at my place
- some weird network or system issue at your place
- some weird interweb issue we can do nothing about
- some weird aliens interfering, or
- something else weird :)
Basically it oughta be working: everything looks fine 'n' dandy here.

been fine for me all evenin, but went off tonight about 12:30 (not long after your post i suspect, and a few minutes after u left the chat channel..). it was also off earlier today, until about the time u got back home ....... so what does that lead you to conclude? :]
its definitely global - no-ones able to get on atm, far as i know. The gal has also stopped sending the stats to the webserver, and i cant currently connect via the remote access thing to check it out any further.- some weird network or system issue at your place
Funny, I though this was the place to post if you found the server was down.do you really need to post a message each time it changes?
people can tell if its up or down by just opening thier client
Also if only some people are not connecting & they DON'T post, how will Mit & Fooli know?
Anyway, I can't connect this morning. Don't know if it's global or not.
Edit: Tried again & it's working now!
Hrrrm. Something here, then. I haven't changed anything though ;) Only weirdness I can potentially see is that, while the gal machine has the right default gateway set (ie, to the IP of my router) the one it's actually using is the IP of my other machine - the one I personally use to run the client. Which might mean the gal effectively loses its internet access when I switch this PC off, and that no-one can access the gal while i'm not online. That's not something I've altered though, and it was working before. Anyway I've just changed that stuff so now it's using the right gateway - see if that helps.Mit wrote:been fine for me all evenin, but went off tonight about 12:30 (not long after your post i suspect, and a few minutes after u left the chat channel..). it was also off earlier today, until about the time u got back home ....... so what does that lead you to conclude? :]
Other than that... I've checked me firewall rules, I've checked the gal machine's network settings... can't think of anything else that might cause these problems.. so in the meantime ibm :]

OK- 2 points to posting each time the server is down
If its intermittent service and not just mine/chezzie's router - a pattern may be evolving, which may say something about the problem that is helful to those who can do something about it
If no-one else is having same problem - then it is our router/isp and we need to know that so we can do something about it!
network setup in the chezzie/cynic house - 3 pc's, over netgear DG814 wired router, 2 main pcs both XP pro sp1, firewalled (zonealarm), virus/spy/adware free (I've checked)
3rd PC hasn't been on! Zone alarm correcly configured and has never had probs with the gal before, so unlikely to be that. Both reasonable spec machines.
when gal is down, other internet access and network access seems fine, tho a internet a little slower than usual (high contention over the holiday period I'm guessing) Mit and Fooli know which ISP we use, and its a 2mb broadband connection.
If there are any more specific factors I can think of and the gal connection drops again, I'll post back here - (lenngth of time playing, AFK for any period, whatever)

No problems just now. Had to try a few times this morning to connect though.
On another note, what happened to the space station in system M-383 orbiting the nearest unknown planet to Reina Roja? It's price list still shows up but the station itself has gone! Is out galaxy under attack by aliens of unknown origins or is it a glitch?

if only some can't connect then its not usually a mit and fooli issue, its more likely an isp (blocked ports), pc (like a firewall), or network issue (router blocking connections) for the player which mit and fooli can do little about. keep in mind thiers possibly tens of thousands of miles of technoligy and wires between you and the server. a problem could occure anywhere along itChezzie wrote:if only some people are not connecting & they DON'T post, how will Mit & Fooli know?
just because you can't connect to a server doesen't mean its down, or that the hoster is having trouble
this is similer to the problems i was having a while back.
fooli, are you useing windows xp and recently upgraded to service pack 2?
service pack 2 limits connections to 10 or so. if you go too far over that limit, connections will have to wait or the tcpip service could temporarily stop all together.
if this is the case, you can goto http://www.lvllord.de/ and download the EventID 4226 Patcher (the tcpip issue is event id 4226 in windows). the file will modify the tcpip.sys file and let you override the built in connection limits and let you specify how many connections can be made into or out of your computer. i set mine to be unlimited. haven't had a problem since.
The game only requires 1 connection so its nothing to do with that. (And i presume the source for that info is valid, but it seems awfully dodgy to me...)http://www.lvllord.de/ and download the EventID 4226 Patcher
that sounds pretty messed to mewhile the gal machine has the right default gateway set (ie, to the IP of my router) the one it's actually using is the IP of my other machine
As you're dh0cp'ing things, the thing thats probably changed is that u turned off the gal machine for the first time t'other week (which was when everything started misbehaving) and (particularly if u turned off the other bits of your network at the same time) the ips allocated via dhcp will change depending on the order things are restarted. Not dhcping it is still probably the easiest solution, but i suspect you've got it fixed now anyway . Fun fun.
I let the universal server auto update to ver 49.5 and then found the galaxy and all the planet servers appeared to be offline and I could not connect to anything.
Assuming some major changes were being made with version update, I politely waited a couple of hours, but still could not connect using either the universal or atractor client.
Eventually reinstalled ver 49.4 again and that fixed the problem.
So if the the Galaxy appears to be offline it might not be.
Worth checking this thread.
