i can host it for you.

some details:
i have hosted worlds for the game for the past 3 years now, am always ready and willing to host more. i have extensive knowledge about the game and how to run servers including how to solve most of the little glitches that often occure in servers. i know most of the settings and commands, am excellent with the games economics and finding possible problems in a bdat. i may not be as active as i used to be, but i still have the time to check the forums and my e-mail a few times a day.

i have a high speed dsl connection and my pc is a 2.6ghz p4 with 256mb ram running windows xp (pc and os don't really matter though since the servers barly use any resources at all).

i believe in strong security on the worlds so when it comes to me doing stuff on the server i will listen to you and only you. for the most part i just host and keep the server running, any in-game stuff (like ops, etc) is all upto you. if you go inactive with no contact at all and the world goes to trash (like freako and his world Luca) the world will get closed until your return. backups are takin on an hourly basis and anything that can be logged is logged.

if any problems arise with the server (problem users, serious bugs, cheaters found in the logs, etc) you will be contacted via e-mail or whatever about the problem and solutions for the problem. backups are takin on an hourly basis, so not much will be lost if a backup needs to be loaded.

Depends on what kind of weapons ya talking about...
For now space has missles and lasers
Lasers:Tab
Missles:Shift+Tab
On worlds it's normaly just Tab and Shift+Tab for weapon a and weapon b.(Where a and b can be weapon 1 - 30something ish+)

Then again the staff might of made one of those wierd bugs that pop up from time to time that disables a key for that version on some configurations. Ick.
...but somehow it eventualy gets fixed.

He won't make them for you, only host them. You have to sign up for it, but no one can anymore.

yea, for the most part, you have to make the world.
i'll help where needed but you gotta do most of the world or it wont really be yours and you wont get the happy feeling of makeing it yourself :P

as for war worlds, if you've ever seen wings field or any other world of mine that had fighting, you'll probably think they suck :P
only war world i had that was good was FFA Combat, and that was before all the new weapon script stuff back when the weaps were programmed in and unchangable.

Hosting

Yes, came a bit interested on hosting stuff. What things does it require? Just mentioning I'd like to host (24/7) something. Is there any security issues concerning about this? Wisers might say something about this. Thanks.

allo allo.

missiles for space ships are indeed unavailable at the moment. Im working through a number of new features for space that'll allow ppl to steal cargo from other ships.. missile systems and ecms will be a big part of the gameplay for that but until its all balanced they'll not be added to space stations.

we're also in the process of changing the world hosting system around, so that everyone will have chance to try building a world for free.. with the option of then registering the world publicly for a tiny lil monthly fee.
In the meantime, if you're really keen on getting a world of your own, send me an email ( mit [at] theuniversal.net ) tellin me a lil about yourself and describing your hosting setup and we'll sort somethin out.. :]

security-wise.. there are no particular issues with running the world program - you'll need to open a single port if you're firewalled/routed and you want the server to be seen publicly.. but other than that it should all be fine (as long as your machine isnt already infested with somethin malicious :] )

Requirements (at the moment) are for a windows pc - just about any OS & CPU made in the last 5 years would probably cope. A bit of diskspace is handy if you want to store a lot of models/textures/radio files and for player records & backups, but even that isnt a major requirement. Bandwidth use is generally minimal for most world hosts (and there are options to restrict it too) - obviously it depends a lot on how many people visit your world, and what sorta stuff they get up to there. Generally the main thing that keeps people from hosting is having to have a machine on 24/7.

Building an actual world is still a confusing and time-consuming process, still requiring lots more tools & documentation to make it even vaguely intuitive. Theres often a complete lack of support from the developers so you'll need patience and determination to get anything good done.
There are however a number of world packs available with partially or fully built worlds - which can be very handy as a starting point to build your own place from.

In terms of what you actually have to do.. You dont need any knowledge of programming... theres a few dialogs on the server you have to adjust (for terrain and model selection etc), a separate windows tool for creating building production lines etc, a couple of simple script files (for setting weapons etc) and then a bunch of in-client screens and commands for changing the world's physical and gameplay settings etc.

Some of it is very obscure but some people find that fun, in a way, i think :]

Regarding hosting etc : Device is currently finishing up the unix version of the server (and im starting to add more things in to allow complete remote control of the world) . Potentially this will allow for lots more worlds to be hosted on a single machine and should make the process of hosting a world for someone else much easier..
