Anyone need a nice new building model?

Post by Mit »

I've managed to cajole one of the artists at my workplace (if you weren't aware, i work for Sony's game development bit during the daytime..) into making us a model or two (in exchange for beer... typical game developer that he is :] )..

So, if any of you world owners have a particular building you'd like making, post it here and he'll model and texture it for you.

he'll do "one or two".. so please can u choose one that you'd really like done 'professionally'.
(Ya need to be specific when dealin with game artists - they dont like creative freedom.. it confuses em ;] )

After a bit of thought I do have a suggestion: a new starport. If we're gonna have one pro model in the game it may as well be one that's on every planet :)

A oil rig, (since I can't find the one on Reina) possibly a skyscraper type building, or a factory, just a couple thing I might need, not to important tho.

The oilrig model on Reina I have. The texture I don't. Apparently it's 90% complete but is on hedge's broken hard drive...

Let me rephrase that. I have the model I built, including the texture template. if anyone's volunteering to paint that wagon, the template's ready and waiting :)

I have the oil rig model & tex an it is pretty durn good compared to some others, so i would reccomend somthing else personally. Oh wait, do u guys mean the fancy one w/ the arm an such...? I prob have that one too.

Some more proper factories would be quite nice, tho. (ill think 'bout it)

That said... the racing season is winding down an i'll prob get another kick of energy soon to finish muh world. Would like to add some UltraKricket n Racin tho... [wink][wink] = ]

ahh ti tum, is that the best we can come up with? :]

Ok, i'll ask him for a factory or two... And im gonna add a couple of my own requests .. Firstly, a mansion - to replace the one that so many ppl currently use, which, although its not a terrible model, appears to have been mapped and textured by a child. A mansion should be a thing of great beauty to reward the players for the extra effort, not something that looks like sticklebricks :)
Other thing i'll ask for is some more houses - they're the most common thing in the worlds, and tho theres a few decent ones out there, some more variation would help.

World owners, please try to have an objective look at the buildings you use on your worlds, and have a hunt around the model library etc for possible better replacements. Dunno if its just me, (im guessing its makes a big impression on new players too) - but most of the worlds i visit generally have a good selection of models, but then the overall look is spoilt by a couple of really crappy ones that stick out like sore thumbs.... i'd love to see more worlds looking pretty :)

ideally, something modular that we can retexture in a variety of different ways.

a factory design or two that can be easily reconfigured in max to create additional factories would probably maximize what we're gettin out of it :P

houses are easy to do.
before one of the hard drive crashes last september, i had 20 or so houses of different sizes and shapes. they were mostly designed with the thought of modular trailor homes. had them ranging from 30ft to 70ft (going every 10 feet) in both single wide, double wide, double wide 2 story, and different L shapes in varing sizes, single and double story. also made them so that ones of similer width and height could use the same texture also, regardless of length.
i'll have to try and grab them off the busted hard drive this weekend. was also a bunch of industrial buildings. i modelled them all useing pics i took of the game Rail Road Tycoon 2.

houses are mostly just textured boxes with roofs.
same can be said for most farms and most factories.
quite easy to do.

as for a derrick, most modern derricks (or the ones i've seen anyway) pretty much look like the ones i made for zoric (except for the colors :P ). just a small building and a scaffold tower, sometimes thier isen't even the tower. even that was just a textured box and pyramid shape.

i think that something a professional should do should be something more complex.
a new, realistic looking fuel refinery would be nice. tons of towers, pipes, smoke stacks with smoke and some with flames.

bad houses are easy to do :)

btw:

This is the one discussed earlier... it's on hedge's "to do" list. Not fabulous but if anyone wants to have a go texturing it, let me know - i'll send ya the template and stuff.

And:

Mit asked me ages ago to do a car showroom... this is it. Only a crappy texture at the mo, by me (it's another one on hedge's tdl) but if you want it in its current state... say the word. One interesting point, mebbe... the lil cars in there are simplified versions of the saloon currently up for texturing on the art group pages. Might make a nice lil featurette (ie, you can buy the cars you can see in the shop window..)

if my mostly you mean "hardly" and by roofs you mean "roofs", then yes.

hehe, that looks similer to the car showrooms i was making last september.

except mine were hexagonal shaped with the building coming off the back only and were going to have the models of the vehicles they were going to sell on zoric 7.

As many as u like, but it's already over 1000 polys, which is why the original 4 car version got stripped down to 2 :) The first version had plain cars without interiors. I added interiors at hedge's suggestion, which is nice, but... mebbe it'd be better without, and with more cars instead, I dunno. Seats and that add quite a bit of detail (and the wheels are still crap, so... mebbe I'll fiddle with it some more)
