Suggestion: Radio play Shoutcast streams (In 0.48.3)

Post by DJFire »

I was wondering if it would be possable if world owners could use shoutcast or some other form of streaming media for the worlds radio, this would reduce bandwidth for the download server and proved a contiueuos varity of music. Although, just a suggstion, i think i would make for a cool addition.

The Island/galaxy radio currently already use some sort of streaming, no?

However, depending on your connection speed, the audio stream will only start to play when the remaining length of the clip can be downloaded in the duration of the audio already downloaded.

If you have a download speed faster than the play speed it should start immediately... I think :P

Well, you have to look back in the history of mp3, as you might know, you do not have to download the whole mp3 to listen to what you already have downloaded, thats what The Universal uses, but im talking streaming media like being about to point to an internet radio station like all the ones on http://www.shoutcast.com. The differance is, those streams do not require downloading a song to play it. It stores the currently playing 1-30 seconds on the song in the buffer on the media player, plus like i said, it would provide a varity of music and avoid copyright issues that could possably arise with the current radio system.

..or alternatively.. i'll randomnly happen upon an open-source bit of code that handles shoutcast stuff and include it in 0.48.3.

Galactic radio will be linked to shoutcast stations on the next client, thanks to the kindly chap(s) at Monkey Head Software (how appropriate..) for providing open-source code. I'll add options to link world radio to shoutcast streams sometime soon.

0.48.4 allows you to use a specific shoutcast broadcast as your world's radio.

To use a shoutcast station you create a file Data/Radio/RadioList.txt which should contain..

Code: Select all

shoutcast=[STATION NAME]
shoutfile1=[URL]:[PORT][PATH]
e.g.

Code: Select all

shoutcast=SpiritFM
shoutfile1=http://marconi.musicfunlife.com:8102/
Options for more world shoutcast stations will be added lata.

yay, finally some excellent travelling music.

the galactic shoutcast radio seems to break after stardriving. have to close and reopen the client to make it work again or it'll just make a "Error Playing Shoutcast Stream" message in the chat box.
