no, they're not all the same size... its always a 256x256 resolution heightmap but the physical size can be adjusted in settings.
change the landscape -> landscape scale setting to increase the size of your map. 165 is default (i think).. so try something like 500 and your map will be bout 3 times larger. (you'll need to relog and probably *resetpos after changing the map size, and id recommend only doing it before your map has been lived on.. )

Put it in the "Maps" folder in your root directory (not data) THEN go to the server console and go to TOOLS ---> Terrain Editor. Then where it says "Height Map" hit the ". . ." button and select your map. Make sure you then hit "Save Terrain Settings" button. Changes are updated on the fly, no restart, etc needed.

i presume you're referring to the f7 map?
To change that, you first need to set the option to use a map image rather than the generated map. Check the docs on Settings -> Graphics -> Map Display Mode - theres various options, including different colours for the generated map.

The image it uses needs to be Data/Images/map.jpg on your server. The downside of that is that currently the client redownloads that jpg image on every session even if it hasnt changed.. Thats on my list to fix soon.

i seem to remember landing on zyrane and seeing a custom F7 image map that when you zoomed in on the map, the custom image dissapeared and green heightmap was zoomable.

ive got my custom image loaded but when i go to zoom in theres no heightmap underneath.
did i hallucinate this "best of both worlds" F7 map on zyrane? or am i doing something wrong like using an odd sized image or something?

From memory the custom map image can be any size, but you might wanna test it with something standard like 256x256 jpg and see if you can get it working that way. In theory, if you have the right map display mode in *settings, it ought to work. The right setting is 4, I believe.

If it doesn't work, well, it's probably broken (it's been broken on occasion in past client updates).

It could be a path problem. The docs say the image has to go in data/textures. Below, Mit says it's data/images. Looking at hedgehog's old reina roja install file, I can't see anything like his coloured map in either folder, though there's something that looks familiar in data/textures/land.
