first time user, can't connect

Post by jaegerschorsch »

i downloaded the version from theuniversal.net, but when i installed it and try to use it says:"connection refused". There is only Andromeda(***Current Gal***) in the list (status: online). If I try to connect from the list it says:"no reponse" but my connection is working.

If I press "don't connect" it is displayed that the chat server is active.

May there be some problems with my firewall. (I allowed access for the game).

bye

:) Hey, guys from "Staff" you're always asking about the username... Where should I enter my username when connecting to the server? When I run Galaxy.exe the window "Connecting to World" with progress bar appears. When the progress bar finishes I see the dialog box "Connection Failed". I press OK and then the Galaxy List opens with "Andromeda (***Current Gal***) Online". When I press "Attempt Connection" it fails again. If I press Don't Connect it opens the Universal game, but still not connected ofcourse, thus it is practically nothing to do in it's menu. What shoul I do to play the game, finally!?

Hate to admit it but this true. I've seen many players come and go...even with help...Even check UniversalStats. Alot of names of players there not seen anymore. If you check the galatic map in-game you'll see 11133 Players. I don't know if it's accurate or not but that's big. :|

its actually not that uncommon. for any game.
millions of people out thier, they can't all play every game.
everybody visits several games before they find one that they really like.

Gal record info for all these, mit:

daniel (jaegerschorsch): correct name, wrong pass and ID

misterwhite: no record of that name attempting to connect. However, "mrwhite" failed with correct name, but wrong pass and ID

BobR: correct name, wrong pass and ID

Yoyoman: correct name, wrong pass and ID

You don't. You register a single username and password to join the game for the very first time: that's your "galactic username", if you like. After that, you don't change it, enter it, or do anything with it.

If you do change it (eg by reinstalling the game and entering a new one) you won't be able to connect - you can't play multiple characters, and the galaxy will reject you if you try.

The thing people usually get confused about is that the username you register with is NOT THE SAME THING AS YOUR IN-GAME NICKNAME. You can change your nickname as often as you like, simply by running the game, hitting F1 and choosing "change nickname" from the File menu.

um, leave something out? :]

The latest clients (0.44.6+) actually fix the biggest problem that can occasionally keep new players out of the game - i.e. If they choose a username thats already been used by someone else. Previously (in all versions for the last 2 years), the connection would just fail (as described above) and ppl would have to post here to clear their record. Now the client actually puts up proper dialogs and stuff explaining the situation and prompting the player for an alternative username (or for the correct password if appropriate). Once that gets rolled out into the public release there should be no further cases of unexplained 'connection refused'.

That said, I checked through all the gal logs a lil while back and found only a few (10-20) cases where people had inadvertenly chosen an existing username, so it hasnt kept that many ppl out. Most of the problems ppl have logging on are actually caused by em trying to create multiple characters (possibly intentionally, possibly just because they'd previously installed and created a character which they subsequently forgot about) or by trying to log on with a different password from previous.

The latter situation is the only one not completely covered by the latest client - as the only secure method for getting round the problem is to have a verified email address attached to each account and then having a 'Forgotten password?' link like the sort you get on webpages/forums. Im halfway through adding this stuff in, tho its gonna be a while yet before the gal server can send reminder emails without seriously affecting its response times to other tasks. (i.e. the email send stuff needs to be made multi-threaded..)

The 11133 figure for players registered is indeed correct.. 90% of those were created in the few days following from Fooli's last press release. (in fact its higher than 11,133 as the gal started reusing unused records a lil while ago).

Of that 11,133 -
Around 8,000 actually made it into the game proper - 3,000+ presumably failed to initialise the graphics. (Which is why i spent 2-3 weeks in february dealing with a lot of directX compatability issues, ultimately meaning the game would init correctly even on my crappy server machine).

Of the 8000 who made it in game, around 4000+ actually made it on to biplaneworld. The other 4000 were most likely kept off because of the amount of lag going on there in the days following the press release. (So thats 7000+ new players already 'lost' - which is why these fixes have been given priority over anything else recently).
Most of the lag at the time was caused by models and textures being downloaded which is why i spent most of March implementing the option to have models and textures stored on a separate web server. Its also why ive made the space stuff work on a rather nice, and rather complicated, peer 2 peer system rather than client->server.

Now i've finally had a world running on my server that a lot of ppl have played (i.e. Republic), ive also been able to locate and improve a lot of other issues relating to the server's bandwidth use that will mean in the future worlds will be able to cope with a lot more activity before lag becomes an issue.

So anyway, out of the maybe 4000 ppl who've actually played the game properly, we've probably got about um, 150-250 regular players atm? Not great i know, but considering the rather peculiar nature of the thing, and that so much of it is/was unfinished & broke, not too bad either, i reckon. Certainly the game is busier overall than at any time in the past.

Of those 4000, I suspect at least a thousand or two of them dont play coz they visited for 10 minutes and think its a game all about flying badly-physic-ed biplanes about.. :] This is why im particularly keen on replacing Biplaneworld with a more basic 'Tutorial World' which'll hopefully help lead players to view the game more as a 'place with lots of different gametypes'.

The goal now is to ensure that next time we do a press release, things will be stable enough to make sure that if 10,000 turn up most of em will actually get a chance to play the game properly. And then its just up to me and the world owners to produce some good designs that keep ppl interested - which is hopefully what Tutorial World, The Republic, space trading & combat and the various other new places comin up will do.
Feck knows how im gonna find time to do all that but hey.. its fun making it whateva happens :)
