i get the same problem on arena - it was a 99.3 client problem if i remember, and i had to take down the forest for the island to be usable for the time being.
to test, do a .treeline 1 and then look at the tree. the whole landscape will vanish as long as a tree is within your line of sight, irregardless of landscape. when you're running a high drawdist, it makes an island with even one tree nearly unplayable.
i'm pretty sure it's a client problem, so it shouldn't matter if zoric is still 99.2, but then again it might. anyway i'm about 99.999% sure he fixed that just before the 0.4.5.x branch started.

well, plantforest would more than likely cause the same issue. note that you can use startblocks to lay diagonal lines of trees, so coming up with a convincing forest isn't that bad.
the easiest thing of course to do is just make a model that's a whole bunch of trees clustered together. that way you can lay little forests all over the place and don't have to worry about how they cluster together and such - you get the layout out of the way in your 3d program.

don'ty know if buildings are included in that 30k think. i assume they are though. but anyway, no island (even in 03) has had more then a thousand buildings that i can remember.
in 03, if you did a plantforest for a total of 30k or more trees, thiered be a pop up saying something along the lines of "Too many static objecxts on map" could just click ignore on it and play without trouble at all....i think. either that or the client would disconnect so you had to set back the map before the error came up.
