New Space Look
New Space Look
I did a few changes on the textures and models, and I think it now looks a bit better. It's nothing big, but it looks a bit better.
Changes:
- New sun texture, no the sun doesn't look like a fried egg anymore, now it has an actual corona.
- Intensified star colours.
*Yellow star: Cirrus
* Blue: Claden's
* Red: Phong's
- New planetery ring with actual ground colours.
- New texture for unknown and unregistered planets, I never liked the moon texture spread across the galaxy.
- New space ship trails, more shiny and colourful.
- More visible missiles: More visible trail and bigger model.
- New bigger and brighter space station.
-New asteroid colour to add variety to the asteroid belt
- New presence in the asteroid belts. "Mining Stations".
- New warp sprite.
And my favourite:
- New stardrive tunnel. It gets brighter as you speed up through the tunnel, and it actually has a "hypnotizing" effect... it looks cool, imo.
Hmmm I might have forgotten something, ship models and textures are still the same. This is just a small change of look to space.
Steps to installation:
1. BACKUP YOUR /clients/data/space file and your /clients/data/textures file. DO THIS IN CASE YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THE NEW LOOK. THIS IS A WARNING.
2. Once you created a backup download the file at this link:
http://www.uploading.com/files/5OW9H1XY ... k.zip.html
or use this one:
http://www.uploading.com/files/5OW9H1XY ... k.zip.html
3. Extract the zip file at your C:\ program files\ theuniversal\ clients\ data folder. The zip file contains a new /space folder and a new /textures folder. If the extraction doesnt work just copy&paste.
4. Let it overwrite everything.
5. Give feedback, but don't come with any bullshit, come in a mannered way.
Enjoy!

Hmmm...
Ok, first things first. Happy for people to want to improve or at least change the look of the game in space. I've been working on some alternative textures and HUD stuff myself, on and off, for the last few months. Years, prolly :]
But... I'd rather you didn't mess with the models used in space, or in fact any of the standard install models used in the game. If you wanna make something better, that's cool, but it'll need checking and including in the installer officially, not just overwriting existing stuff.
Generally it doesn't have an impact on gameplay if you do that, except where collisions are calculated based on a given model; but it does start to mess with camera positioning and so on, which is a niggle. And a bigger niggle, from my perspective, is that you've used a simple 400 poly model I built for netrek mode (ie top-down, seen from miles away) to replace a 3,000 poly station model that even with that sort of detail, isn't nearly detailed enough. The current model is bad enough, but that v. low poly version just makes the game look like a child made it (which, in a way, is true :])
Don't mean to sound too harsh, it's just the models I have a problem with. Textures you can pretty much go for. It's a pride thing really :]
At some point I might finish up a set of replacement space stuff as another alternative: I've got new nebula and stardrive textures; a higher res moon texture for unknowns; and (probably most significant) an alternative set of icons and other bits for the HUD, which makes a nice change.

Yeh, they work better with small amount of detail on black, otherwise you tend to lose the effect somewhat.Baladin wrote:the stardrive tunnel is a little too bright imo

For my tastes that sun is waaay overkill. It's nice but it needs toning down about 90% ;)
The trails... I prefer the original. You'll have seen the original texture provides a few different colours (which the game uses differently according to what it's putting trails on). So that multicolour approach is required, really. Second thing is, they should fade to black at the edges, otherwise the trail looks more like your ship is squeezing a giant tube of warpy toothpaste all over the sky. Maybe that was the idea, but it does detract somewhat from the traily nature, where it looks semi-transparent. There's not much space to play with there, I know, but maybe you could try something...

Incredible, so many diferent opinions.
Well this was just a small "makeover", I didn't want to make it any bigger. It's a small change I did, according to my preferences, and so I decided to share it. It's nothing that I want to make "official". I don't really want it anywere near the official client, in my opinion, player made changes of this category shoudn't.
I understand many people won't like it, that is OK! That's why I insist on creating a back up, because these are my preferences, but it never hurts to share?
For example the station, yes it's low poly, low detail aswell, but some people like it, some not. I like it, that's why I shared it. But there's always that backup station model to bring it as it was before.
What I'm trying to say is (I'm having expresion problems today), I want this at this is right now, of totally volunteer, if people don't like it they always have the chance to backup their files, it's all according to preference.

it wasn't bad, it was quite nice for traders.
but it caused problems with combat due to the weapon/model collision system.
see http://theuniversal.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5796 for info
basically it replaced the current space station with a copy of the planet sphere that was 1/5th the size of planets, and textured like the earths moon to make it easily visible.
