I need help with setting up my windows xp static ip.i have followed the instructions of a guide at http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm but i dont like the sound of having to call up my isp if i get the dns servers/name servers wrong. The main problem: i have looked at cmd and done ipconfig/all and got almost completly different info from what my router page says and i keep comin back to cmd and doing this and it seems to change the info everyday.Any help on which one im supposed to listen to would be appreciated. In the meantime a still have a couple tricks up my sleeve.

P.S if i type in the wrong dns servers could i just click the dot i was on(obtain ip adress automatically or somethin) and get my connection back?

the cmd/ipconfig report is your computers ip IN the network, not the ip you get from the isp.

if you want your computer to have a static ip on the network for port forwarding, go into your control panel, open network connections, right click Local Area Network, select properties. a window will pop up with your nic card. right click it, select properties. highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" click properties. select Use the following IP and type in an ip, like 192.168.1.50, use whatever subnet mask comes up. Default Gateway needs to be your router. for the DNS servers, you could just use whatever is in the ipconfig /all. if the dns servers change in the future, yea, you could just switch it back to obtaining them automatically to get good ones again.

as for a static external ip, you need to chat with yourisp about that :P
