Google has a very simple model maker:
http://sketchup.google.com/products.html
Could models from that be converted to Universe/World models?

virtually any modeling program can work.
as long as thiers some way to get the models to .3ds or .x format.
this can be via exporting from the modeling program, or by converting with a seperate program (like Deep Exploration)

Yes it can export:
Export models in 3DS, DWG, DXF, OBJ, XSI, VRML, and FBX file formats
I downloaded it about 2 hours ago, and I already figured out how to make a 2 wing house with a front porch. Not bad for a guy who runs screaming into the next room at some of those modeling programs.
Oops, need to read the fine print on that, in order to export it to those files you have to pay $495.00 for the "pro" version.

So you tried Blender as well? Thats what did it to me.

Yep, Blender was a trip and a half. Its one of those programs that lurks in the dark recesses of my hard drive threatening me with terrors best left unsaid.

I've been modelling for 5 or 6 years, and Blender confuses the hell outta me. However, it's very powerful once you get your head around it (so I've heard) - and it's free.
As discussed elsewhere on the boards... Sketchup seems ok, except for the Pro/export issue, and (probably, I haven't tried it just scanned the site) it doesn't do uvwmapping - and we're not going to support it anytime soon as far as allowing import to the MC goes. Next format is, I believe, .dxf (whichever one zar asked for).
Oh, and we shouldn't really be talking about p2p in that way on this site zar. Tut tut ;)

1. he was pointing out spam in this thread that has now been deleted. Maybe I should have deleted his post too
2. there's nothing wrong with bumping old threads if you have something relevant to say

I have this program the pro edition and its not to bad very simple to use and is good for making houses etc only prob I found was lack of UVmapping and the size of the models are huge even when you make them really small I saved it as a 3ds file and opened it in 3dm 9 and it was massive. other then that its a good program to get used to modeling
