Linking your old client with your old World

The new version is upon us, and with it, no more galaxy and no more player owned worlds (for now).

Howver all hope is not lost. In the future player owned worlds will be available again. But what about until then? New clients wont connect to old worlds so until then, we have to use old clients to connect to old worlds bypassing the galaxy so we can still design worlds and be ready when the opportunity becomes available again.
If you do not have the old world server, it can be downloaded here: http://theuniversal.net/worldcreation.php
it even comes with an old version of the client in case you need it

or, if you just want the client only, you can download it here: http://www.tuwr.net/TU552.zip
it is the client EXE and the old interface.dll. the interface.dll for the new version wont work with the old client. the 55.2 bass.dll is also in the zip, but i don't remember if the new one still works. just unzip the files into a The Universal/Clients directory that you want 55.2 in. Don't use the same folder the current version client is in since it uses a different interface.dll file.

its slightly more difficult, but it is still possible if you still have the 55.2 or older client or installer
if you have the installer (link above), you can just install the game to a different location and skip to Part 3 below.

otherwise:
Part 1: locate the games install directory:
1. Right click the client icon on your desktop
2. click properties
3. click find target, a window will pop up containing Galaxy.exe and a clients folder.

Part 2: clone the Clients folder
1. Select the clients folder, hit Control+C and then Control+V
2. Rename the new folder to Clients2 or Clients55.2 or whatever you want
3. Open the new clients folder and rename or delete AutoUpdater.exe, this will prevent the game from updating itself to the current version.

Part 3: Now to link the old client whit the old world server
1. if you still have the new clients folder open, just highlight the location in the address bar (if it just says Clients in the address bar, then go into the Tools menu, select Folder Options, click the View tab, and put a checkmark next to Display the full path in the address bar, then hit ok)
2. hit control+c to copy it
3. on your world server, open the options menu and select General Options
4. in the text box below "Directory containing your game clients" erase any existing text
5. hit control+v to paste the copied text from step 2 into the box
6. in the box labeled Client To Use type in TheUniversal.exe
7. hit ok.

Part 4: Using it
Now that you have it all done, you can just client the Globe icon on the world server to connect the old client directly to the old world.
1. When you click the globe icon and the client opens up, a box may pop up saying 'downloading update' but do not close it or it will just pop up again the next time the client is opened. you have to let it fail.
2. The update may download all the way, or it may stop halfway threw and an error will pop up saying that the autoupdate failed (due to step 3 in part 2) and asking if you want to come here to download it. Just click 'no'
3. Another error will pop up saying that your client is out of date and some stuff may not work (but it will work fine since your connecting to an old server). just click ok on it to close it
4. You should now be on your world.

The next time you open the client, it may or may not try the auto update again.
It seems that after it fails it wont try again for a little while.

Bit harsh :)

I think all it is, is that Hammerhands mistook the post for one about the game client - but when we're talking about the globe icon we're talking about the world server, not the client.

Also, having a monkey avatar on the boards doesn't mean anything. The word you're looking for on the left there is "staff" (though Zar's probably the longest-term world owner apart from mit, who doesn't count, so he does know a fair bit about this stuff :] )

zar do you think you could .zip me a copy and email it my possibly?

All I could get my hands on was a 0.51 client off A-Tractor. I did what you said, but it always freezes at the Connecting to world, F11 to abort. F11 I assume attempts to take me to the space station main menu that doesn't exist anymore, so I just get errors with a stuck frame screen.
