ive found that there appears not to be any trade routes that poor people (me!!) can use, ive looked and i cant trade anything, not even water
You're not looking very hard :)
Use your fipro drive to get to Cirrus Minor (go to Zion, for instance). You can trade water from Syv to Zion or Treasure Island and make half a cred per tonne, at the time of writing.
Or go to Tau Ceti (fipro to The Republic). You can trade food from The Republic to Iridis and make just over 1cr per tonne.
You have to start small, but it soon builds up: I made 180,000 creds or something in about two weeks of occasional trading and pottering about the galaxy. It does take a while to get going - you'll need to do a few crappy runs with water and food and so on - but then suddenly you can afford minerals, and metals, and so on and on.
You just need to think carefully about what you trade where, find the most profitable routes and exploit them (watch the changing prices though), try not to make any mistakes. Fipro and stardrive around the place to get a sense of what's cheap, where.
I'm rubbish at trading and even I managed to make some cash - stick at it :)
