I have a dedicated server.

Post by alner »

Hi,
Just telling you guys I have a dedicated server, if any staff want anything hosted, like a world, I could possibly do it.. Somehow.
Specs:
OS - CentOS 4.x
AMD Sempron 3000+
512MB RAM
1GB of virtual memory
10MBPS connection
Hosted in Savvis datacenter - Dallas - Texas - USA.

My bandwidth is wholesale, and really good quality, you'll find it's faster than other providers, so if any of you want some files hosted, as long as they aren't too big and wont be downloaded much I'll see what I can do. I only have 1000GB of bandwidth and it's for web hosting - so that explains the non-generosity.

Ta,

you don't realy need that much bandwidth...
the server only uses a little of your CPU witch is realy good...

You shouldn't post pointless posts... To be honest, 1kGB is the minimum bandwidth any decent ded host offers.

it wasen't pointless, he's basicly just saying all that bandwidth and power is nothing special :P

i used to run 8 worlds on a 450mhz k6 with 64mb ram and windows me while limited to only 15kb/sec upstream. the pc always had more then 50% resources still free and the only time thier was lag was when thier were more then 20 total players connected.
worlds use less resources now then they did long ago, so it'd be even easier currently.
they generally use much less then 1kb/sec upstream per player.

Ok, where's the linux version of world server? :P in development - when?

Hah, joking, well I would host worlds off that machine, except my bandwidth on my home machine is bollocks - 10GB.

Wait until I'm in good old UK zar, and I'll be having huge amounts of bandwidth.

umm...why? i don't care about your bandwidth. like i said earlier, its nothing special.
worlds use less then 1kb/sec upstream per player if thier not downloading things off the server.

sabrada for example. running for almost 4 days now and only sent about 600mb so far.
comes out to only 1.99 kb/sec uploaded.
if people haden't downloaded radio songs or models, it would have only sent 160mb

somebody with a 56k modem can host a world and have 4 players on it with barly any lag if thier not downloading stuff.

Theres one available now. Contact device, ( device [at] theuniversal.net ) for info. It is limited in some respects (no windows interface so no way of setting things like the stuff on the terrain dialog), but if you do all the initial creation and setup of the world on a windows kit as normal, you can copy all the files over and have the linux version used for hosting once its complete. The Republic was made this way and now runs on a linux box.
