when i get in i see the Republic and the Biplane planet etc. however i dont see anyone around. Now i did notice however thst in the universal Small screen under gateways list that there are 34 connections.. where are these people and how do i find them?

Ehh...It refers to servers and players connected as whole and the ( ) repesents how many players are currently online.

Being online could be in-space,in a spacestation,on a planet or some starsystem with some new planet you never heard of yet.

could also be just some random number that rarly updates and/or includes attempted but failed connections, etc, etc.

afaik, it's never actually worked.
