Talking about good freeware modellers, my friend is a complete overly-obsessed, talk-about-nothing-but 3D software guy. One of the packages that pours out of his mouth is one called...
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... p_id=33028
Wings 3D.
Available at Sourceforge. He praises it so much. Apparently it is especially good for character modelling. or summink
I myself do not have a clue how it works. maybe you ought to try
Anim8or he also mentioned. nice one.

i use anim8or for my modelling.
i also use UVMapper (
http://www.uvmapper.com) for mapping the models since anim8or sucks terribley when it comes to mapping.

whats mdl? a model format or a texture format?
Deep Exploration probably could. it can import and export nearly 100 model and picture formats.

well its a model file that is being used by half life
its just a file which have all the texture and models in it
oh and if im not mistaken universal uses .atm and a separate texture file right?

mdl is a Quake format, as far as I know. Mebbe HL uses it too. Anyway.. it's not going to help you unless you have a way of exporting mdl files to 3ds or x format. If you can create .x or .3ds files, you can use The Universal's Model Converter to convert them into .atm files. You can also use .x files directly in game, thought .atm is way more efficient (and includes support for lots of additional features).
And yes, we have separate texture files at the moment - bmp, jpeg, tga etc formats supported.
Btw - don't use copyright 3d content in-game.

to the best of my knowledge, .x can't be used anymore since the model lists wont display .x files anymore. think since the 0.03.9x age

Might want to give this a shot, looks like it should convert .mdl to .3ds, but don't know how well, or if it's just a trial version. Program is called 3dwin.
http://www.tb-software.com/index.html
Crossroads is another option, while it doesn't work with .mdl it does work with .obj and a few other formats. It can be downloaded here.

If you're looking for other things, you might want to try checking
http://www.ziekerdanziek.tk/
While the site deals with mostly vmrl worlds, and programs that can make vmrl models, it is updated frequently, and some of it can be transfered to be valid here. It might be worth looking at if you're bored.

I have been using Autocad 2004 for my modeling. This program is great in builting models, however it is very expensive. ($2,000 US) Autocadd exports to 3ds and other formats. The problem is the UV mapping. (there is none) So I am in the need of a good mapper like UVMapper or something similar.
Zar, do you still have the freeware version of UVMapper? If so can you share it?
I am to cheap to buy a UV mapper so I have downloaded Blender and have been learning it for 4 weeks now. Progress is slow however I am moving ahead. I don't know if it will do what we need it to do. (maybe its me)
Also decreet offers a 30 day trial of 3d max version 7.
