Comments from a newcomer

Post by Stromb »

Hello

Firstly, let me say that i'm greatly impressed by the concept of this game, which i find very interesting.

Secondly, it seems that i can't play it. Let's resume all i've made during the past hour :

Reading all the website, wandering in the forum;

Entering the game and figuring how the user interface works;

Entering the planet in front of my space shuttle (a planet where there is aircraft fighting it seems

There, first "bug", the game crash to desktop. I launch it again, enter the planet, see many files loading, hear nothing, see a few untextured things and a white explosion, then, second bug, the game freeze (not my computer).

So i look again in the forum, find a 2 apcks of textures, install them, launch the game again, see more textured things, use F1 key in search of information, look the various details, close the window, damn, it close the game.

So i launch the game again, have some sounds when flying and entering the same planet, hit shift+F3 in search of infos, read a few lines, the last one saying something like autokick newfolder after 1 minute ..., see in the background a colorful explosion and the game freeze, again.

Ahah ! Well, if you think that all this shall prevent me playing this game, then you're wroong ! :D

I don't know how i'll manage to, but i shall find a solution ! By the way, if some of you have clues on this or that, i'd appreciate.

As a sidenote, i've a medium computer, which handles normally (well 99 % of time) every game that exist (or at least i've played).

next step ...

Post by Stromb »

my next try was very positive. At the beginning half the map was white (no texture), but finally it works. No more crash & co. Just i have no sounds ... ?

i bought a plane. I must say that it seems impossible to control the plane. i've been rolling, apparently on the ground but inside the plane, in hills and water.

i shall try again

ah, now i have understand how to use a plane, and even managed to shoot a tractor and land once without crashing.

and this time sounds was ok.

i don't understand the use of F8 key, which seeems to block my mouse. Also, i don't understand how to break when you're in the tractor (unless by changing vehicles ...), many point are still not clear, but this is more inetresting.

you should make some docs for this game, because many thiings are hidden here and there, or not clear (What is VSI for instance, ...).

I shall give you other comments later. hope it helps.

I'm very happy to see a posotive comment this long once in a while,
The VSI is how much your going up and down e.g VSI: -3 means your going down to earth at -3. To land keep the VSI between -1 and -15, I like to have a nice long land so it's easier which is about -10.

This Site is very useful for everyone,. world owners to new commers.

Or you can check out the forums and see loads of stuff posted which has no worthwhile reading because the games been massivley changed.

The crashes, well I have those lots of times, keep the window not full screen, but adjust it to cover your screen, so you can turn away from the game.

The game is always in beta - because we are so good :P

Have fun,
10

F8 Locks the mouse. Dont ask y anyone would want such a pointless gadget, cos I dont know. The ' Tractor ' is actually a hovercraft, and the hovercraft is a tractor (But only on Biplaneworld [The world ur on]). Once again: Dont ask.

Btw: Its nearly impossible to stop that hovercraft (The one u sed was a tractor), so dont even try lol

Biplaneworld is a 'Mess About' Server, where ther's no serious money involved ect. Most Experienced players and Game Operators (People who check to see if ur not swearing/being a naughtywaughtypants and to help u if ur stuck) hang about in 'Econ' worlds. My fave econ world is Sabrada, if u ever want to stop by. 8)

But if u cant find an 'Experienced player' or GO, just ask here in this very forum. :D

mouse lock is excellent for 2 things.
1. for racing. you can turn much faster when you lock the mouse and quickly move it to turn. its much faster then using the arrow keys.
2. for fighting. in ground vehicles with certain weps, you can point them up/down/left/right using mouse lock.

Sounds?

Post by Fudrake »

even though i'm not a newcomer, i'm equally puzzled at the fact that there are so few sounds in the game... can any one tell me why? Are there meant to be any at all? I only hear the sonuds when i'm using the star drive. (the effects there look cool, btw. well done :D)

world owners can also configure weapons to make sounds if they wish, and for over a year now i've been threatening to activate the code i've already written to deal with engine noises. :)

Thanks for your comments Stromb. I appreciate its not exactly the most welcoming thing at first but many ppl seem to find that its worth the effort in the end.
We're continually adding stuff to make the game more accessible - the latest full build download has replaced the 'wars' button with a 'help' button that links to 4 pages of guides, faqs etc and includes all the models and textures used on biplaneworld, so there should be less problems connecting for the first time.

Maybe suspension noises if u land from a jump..

Mouse lock is very useful for the occasion FPS-style vehicle. Somewhere, there's mechs with a crosshair in first-person view, and it's extremely useful to be able to look around with the mouse instead of trying to get on a level with someone to shoot 'em :]

Oh yea. HH's heavy mechs. how cool were they :D

i'd like to see some propeller noises or jet engine noises from planes.
Or alternatively some sad bloke going "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEawwwwwwwwwww".

That'd make a good impression for the newcomers on Biplaneworld, :D

Maybe the sea's waves as it goes on the shores too. I look forward to the day where sounds from the game fill my ears.
