newbie user cannot connect at all

Post by bunnyhero »

hi, i just downloaded the current full galaxy client (0.1.34) and installed it. i launch the client, and enter in a username and password. the connection dialog comes up and says "Connection refused." i click the "abort" button, and the "Galaxy List" appears, with only one server available (Andromeda (*** Current Gal***), Status: online). i select andromeda and click "attempt connection". the "connecting to world.." dialog appears, but after about 30 seconds, the connection fails with an error ("Could not connect to the galaxy - no response").

i'm not sure what to try at this point. i tried deleting the Tractor.cfx as mentioned in other threads, and tried logging in with different usernames/passwords, but i always get the same error.

am i missing something? by the way, i am behind a NAT/router/firewall. do i need to forward any ports on it or anything?

i've never had any previous version of the client installed on my machine.

thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated!

usually Tractor will negotiate a port with the firewall/router from what I've heard - it could be that the galaxy is down. Is the firewall one on a router, or one on ur PC software-like?

the router is supposed to have some kind of firewall, but i am also running windows xp sp2 and its built-in software firewall. i'll try disabling that.

I have the same problem - although I'm not behind a firewall, so I don't think that that's an issue.

The Galaxy server's had a few connections refused owing to bad name/password combinations. I'm no expert but I'm wondering whether you've either installed a previous version using a different name/password, or have happened to choose a name already in use.

Mit? Miiiiit?

I suggest exiting it, try again in about 10 minutes, choose a hard password. It happened to me the first time I tried - thought I was banned :P

I'll try a different name/password, perhaps. I've never played or installed before though.

I'm a noob and i'm not sure if i'm doing anything right, but it keeps refusing me as well... I have a router firewall, and it doesn't automatically open ports, so what do i do?

Ok, there's a problem with the galaxy server I can't fix (which to be honest is pretty much every problem except my having dislodged the LAN cable). It was working for me earlier this evening, but now I'm also getting connection refused. I've mailed Mit and we can only wait and see. Sorry...
