A quick update on galaxy weirdness, losing credits and so on

Post by Fooli »

Short version: wait a day or so, things might be back to normal.

Longer version: I saw Mit this weekend. He's been excessively busy on RL work projects and hasn't had any spare time to deal with issues over this way. His suggestion was simply to restore the galaxy to a previous time-point, but I've got a separate issue with that that I need him to resolve before I'll try it... should be a day or so and then we'll see if we can get (most) people back to (what passes for) normal.

Worse case situation, we get a bit of time from Mit to check what caused the issue, hopefully fix whatever it was, and then we reset the galaxy. I think it's about time for that anyway...

I'll post again when there's something more concrete to say about this. Thx for your patience, as ever..

Ok, we're back to a 12th October backup. Hopefully this will fix the lost items and cash problem for most players, without introducing too many new problems for people who lose stuff they earned between 12th October and now.

It's a crappy workaround fix but hey ho. It's largely a workaround game. Remember the mantra... beta beta beta. beta beta. beta beta beta!

Post here if you have any major problems with the game following this change.

Thanks again for your patience...

What does that mean? You did not regain your credits, or you did regain them but have since continued to lose them? Please be clear, or I can't help.

Thanks Lucifer. Well that isn't good. It kinda proves I was right not bothering with the backup until we knew what the problem was... something may be quite wrong with the galaxy.

Has anyone else lost credits/stuff since yesterday?

indeed, the great Stimutacs had been granted back his credits. Upon reading this post, he decided to sacrifice them to test a hypothesis he had heard in space: Not only the station transactions will take your money, but even the trade report will.

Upon testing this hypothesis, the great one checked and he had 57k cr. then used the trade report... in cirrus minor, i think, and then checked his credits again to test this theory, and indeed it was confirmed, 0.0 credits.

This further evidence may point to the source of the problem.. perhaps the script that takes money in space. Perhaps maybe too the ...*looks around at the room*...aliens  themselves, are bugged as well? That is my new theory, the Stimutacs theory of space discreditment.

Whatever the cause, the proof seems clear, space is demanding your money, gentlemen.
Perhaps it is a sign from above telling us to donate more!

resets always fix nearly everything :P

and heck, if even a reset doesn't work, then then could just reload a backup so we all have our ships at least.

As I think I've mentioned somewhere, we're not planning to reset until mit has finished some important new bits (and fixed some old bits) of the space game.

Also, it'd make no difference in this case. I saw mit today and we went through the problem... came up with some ideas, so when he next has time (hopefully in a week) he'll have a look at fixing the bug. In the meantime... sorry, nothing we can do.

However, what would help is clarification from people who have experienced the bug, because it doesn't affect everyone.

- when you lost stuff, presumably when you bought something, did you lose it immediately or when you relogged?

- if you lost stuff, what's your galaxy name? We have a theory to do with specific galaxy record numbers, but I can't always work out who is who from forum names... I need the galaxy names please.

Thx

galaxy name: Stimutacs
planet nickname: NR_stimutacs
lost items immediately after trading in the zoric space station, and also when using the trade report in cirrus minor, i did not relog, it happened instantly.

*edit

i didnt lose items, sorry. i lost credits. i think around 55k...insignificant pocket change.

i did some more expeimenting:

mined for some cargo, sold the cargo at the zoric station. and was able to buy missiles with the money before leaving the station, my remaining money didnt disappear until i left the station.

someone with some cr should test an alien to test my hypothesis that anything that is programmed to take your credits in space is bugged.

Galaxy name : cliff
Planet nickname: wes773

I lost a little over 2100cr while testing out the trade report. I don't care about the credits, I just hope this helps get this bug fixed.

Fooli: Why you mark bug topic as "Not a Bug"? -))

I think, needed 5 mins for fixing this bug, but we waiting too long time and playing paused. Mission Impossible...

Because it probably isn't a bug in the code - it's more likely to be corruption of the record file (at least, that's what I vaguely remember talking about with Mit last time he was here). If I'm wrong, we'll change the status. Either way it's a bit academic until Mit has time to/finds the time to/actually wants to look at it seriously... nothing's happened since I met him last, unfortunately.

Yes, thankyou Gorach :] In fact this is a perfect illustration of something else I discussed with Mit: that my job is principally to sit here getting grief from players on his behalf :]

We all love the Mit and want the Mit to spend time mending and improving the game, oh yea! But whether it's a 5 minute fix or a complete rewrite of something important, makes no difference. If he doesn't have the time, or can't be arsed at the moment, then you'll just have to suffer (or be patient).

Just don't shout at me, I can't do anythin about it other than what I do: try to mend what I can, and spend time trying to convince Mit to do something about it :]

I think, in fact, that this is the catalyst we need to restart the galaxy. I can't say when because Mit does want to finish up some code before the restart - important stuff, like measures to prevent people cheating, and new quest elements. So in the long run it's probably a good thing. I do understand, however, that it's a pain in the arse in the meanwhile if you play in space. All I can do is apologise and continue making representations on your behalf to the only big monkey in the sky who can do anythin about it.

We just.....care....and worry..We want everything to work and what is working to not get ruined, not because of our own personal selfish interest but because we care for what this project may or may not become.....yes it's just a game...but for us it's our little game...we don't want it to deteriorate slowly, and sadly that's very observable, specially in the last 2 years. In short words, we have passion for this project, that's why we're still here.

Maybe we just care a bit too much.......

Sorry, Fooli -) But when my project has any critical bug, I will fix them in short time. And it is not even for the users, it's rather for themselves and for my beloved Project -)
