sky scrapers for your worlds

Post by zaroba »

i'm going to make a bunch of skyscrapers over the next week or two....or until i get bored of doing it, probably after a week or two. i am starting with the worlds tallest and will work down to smaller towers. they wont be high detail at all, mostly just going for the rough shape and appearance of the actual building. they will also be roughly to scale.

unless scaled down, the games normal 2x2 ground smoothing wont be enough for most of these towers if your world uses the default or smaller tile size, so each one will also have a below ground foundation so they can be placed on mildly sloped terrain without them appearing to be floating. this 'basement' will also render the buildings heights less accurate due to it being included in the overall model height. the posted heights do not include the basement.

First up is the Sears Tower: **remade, redownload if you had the old one** [/b]
Image
with a height of around 1450ft, this 178 poly building has a 5x5 default tile size base.
its modular. so later on i will post a dozen or so smaller towers that use its texture as well.
(btw, the little gray box next to its base is the standard small store model)

model: http://www.tuwr.net/tuwr/~miscstuff/mod ... -sears.atm
texture, 661kb 512x1024: http://www.tuwr.net/tuwr/~miscstuff/mod ... -sears.jpg
'rough' template, 1.5mb: http://www.tuwr.net/tuwr/~miscstuff/mod ... plate1.bmp
'clean' template, 1.5mb: http://www.tuwr.net/tuwr/~miscstuff/mod ... plate2.bmp

changes: by sacrificing the polies a bit, the texture was able to be much smaller. its still just as modular, if not more so as a result of the change. it also looks much more like the real building now too.

also soon to come:
shanghai world finance center - 2nd tallest - 1614ft
patrona's towers - 3rd tallest - 1483ft - going to make a single one, and two with abridge between them)
jin mao tower - 5th tallest - 1381ft
TWO International Finance Center - 8th tallest - 1362ft
empire state building - 9th tallest building - 1250ft

possibly will get made:
freedom tower - 1776ft
simcity 2000 arco's

your probably thinking of the Burj Dubai, and yes, your right, it is the tallest.
or, it will be once its completed. its estimated completion date is this september and it will be roughly 2683ft tall.
it's another building i plan to make, its not in the list since its not a completed building yet.
the Freedom Tower isn't completed yet either, but its a sept 11th memorial.

as for the statue of liberty...ehh...people aren't my expertise. fhko could try that one.

some other things i might make later are the theoretical Japanese mega-towers sometimes seen on discovery channel. the 13,000ft tall X-Seed 4000 for example.

next up is the Taipei101: **remade, redownload if you have it already**
Image

also with a base of 5x5 tiles, this 277 poly building is 1670ft tall.
model: http://www.tuwr.net/tuwr/~miscstuff/mod ... pei101.atm
texture, 643kb 512x1024: http://www.tuwr.net/tuwr/~miscstuff/mod ... taipei.jpg
'rough' template, coming soon
'clean' template, coming soon

Changes: nothing much. just a remodelling and remapping so it can use a much smaller texture file.

Unnecessarily massive textures zar... can't you repeat mapping with whatever tools you're using? When every bit of the tower's the same, just map different faces to the same part of the uvmap and texture it all once. Lets you play with nicer textures with more resolution and not have stupdendously long but very plain jpgs ;)

had origionally thought about doing it that way, but decided against it so people could but text on the sides of buildings if they wanted.

might remap them that way anyway. they are quite large.

With the new model format and MC, that's what the override texture is for. Must confess I haven't used it yet, but the basic idea would be to identify some polys where you'd allow people to add text (or whatever); in your "standard" texture you'd just make those polys flow with the normal windows or what have you; and then an override texture could be used optionally to replace it, thus giving everyone the choice. Normally this would mean adding a bit of poly detail to the model but that's fine, especially when they're such low poly models anyway; and much better than a 4mb jpg texture :)

they'd look a lot nicer if the textures were fixed on them :P
if you have shots of them from any other angles i could try and remake them if you want.
hmm....i might even have them in my client still, if so i could remap them so the textures aren't all screwy on the 2 of them.

on friday i'm going to make some more buildings.

If you still have them in your client make sure you can send them to me, that'd be great!

And, if you can fix the textures, that'd be even better.

finished one so far, the other 2 are close to being done. but have to go to work now.
gave it concrete siding, a tar roof, and glass...glass.
could easily give it other textures if you want.
