Why is the Stardrive range an elipse?

In simple terms: The map is really a square in actuality (or at least more squarish than it appears), but because of how the interface is setup, it has to be squished into a rectangle. Flattening the warp distance ring into an ellipse along with it.

If you change your screen resolution to a more square setting (instead of the usual rectangle)it is a circle.

its the same on worlds (before anybody asks)
the heightmap is square, the world map is 256 tiles in north/south and east/west
but in actuality it is a rectangle. each tile on a map is wider then it is tall.
