flametrail atm. & skin/template... for flamethrower

Post by flametard »

my "magma suit" on xebec will (hopefully) have a flamethrower-like weapon. i was hoping to use the "flametrail atm" (i'm guessing that this is the model that comes out of the vehicle when they use the jetpack) but i cant put this file in my weapons folder for some reason.

can someone send me this file or tell me why i cant use it as a weapon model?

any ideas how to make a flamethrower?

thanks!!!!

A few ideas.

1 - you can use any model/texture as a weapon. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "can't put this file in my weapons folder". If it won't show up in the server weapon model list, that's weird. If it won't show up in game, that's probably to do with what options you've saved the model with. It's basically two interlocking planes... if you have "compress vertices" turned on when you save it, that can mess up planar models (a bug). Or maybe that model doesn't have UVs... mit adds the flame effect in code, I think, rather than mapping a texture onto it. I think.

2 - there used to be a flamethrower weapon type, a long time ago. It died when mit added all the model effects stuff. Could be resurrected perhaps...

3 - in the meantime I'd probably try doing a flamethrower in a couple of ways.

Firstly, you could just use a model like flametrail.atm with a nice flame texture on it, maybe make the model rotate as it fires to simulate a bit of animation in the flame.

Secondly, you could try adding a flame effect to a model (probably planar like flametrail.atm) and do it that way. Not so sure this'd work.

Thirdly... you could try using muzzleflash on the weapon and setting it to something huge and extreme... again, with a simple planar sort of weapon model, but maybe with little or no texture and relying on the muzzle flash to generate the flame effect when it fires.

thanks for the info

tonight ill try uploading flametrail.atm into model converter and saving it under a different name. the only problem is i cant find the skin for it. and i dont trust my ability to make translucent textures in photoshop. but it's better than nothing. if i cant get iot to work ill use one of the "sprites" that comes in the weapons scripts.

i got the flametrail atm & found the flametrail texture. i ran it through the model convertor and saved it under a different name.

but when i try to upload it into my models selector in my client window it give the message:

! model locked
this model can only be used on its original world

i even tried making some changes to the model in the models converter and it didnt help.
any ideas?
the model is 2 flat planes that intersect.

ahhhhhh.

Right. Well that'll be because the model is locked, then. I'll do you another one - check your mail.

welp, it looked aweful, cause the models use a different transparency than the flametrail most likely. I'm going with the graphic=17 its a red fireball, looks rad. but thanks anyway. probably use that model for my invisible scource items.

I was thinking it might be possible to do a crude but effective flame thrower effect if you use a rapidly moving vertice animation with a flame effect attached to it. When not firing, the vertice would reside on the end the the vehicle's flamethrower nozzle. Although the end result might behave a little more like a flaming sword than a flamethrower...

I'll go try it out and get back to you with the results.

Update:

Well it wasn't what I hope for, but the idea is fundamentally workable. The only problem is that the frame speed of the client limits the rate at which the flames spawn, meaning you can never get enough fire at any one time to create the illusion of a continuous stream of fire.

I'm using the graphic=17 sprite its a glowing red fireball with animations. with a rapid fire setting.. its a fun weapon.

but what you've got here looks more like a flamethrower, so if you feel like providing the model and texture id love to try it out and see if it would work better. thx.

Well it doesn't actually have a texture (or is UVmapped so one can be applied) and you will notice it turns sideways when you walk or run, but for any rapidly firing weapon it does project a fairly decent stream of flame.
