Which firewall you running?
You shouldn't really need to open a specific port for the game... just make sure the client has got full access, inbound and outbound, for TCP and UDP traffic.
Only thing I can think of (in a slightly drunken state) is that you're running the game from somewhere on a network (ie not a pc with a direct connection) and maybe you need to set up NAT or something..

You have three firewalls? Heh ;)
I dunno. I run the game and access the net via a router; all I needed to do was sort permissions on the router for this PC, and configure my local firewall (zone alarm) to allow traffic from the game.
If you've got access to the gateway you'll probably want to have a look there to see what's what.

That's a firewall problem, either software (PC firewall) or hardware (router firewall). Basically the game can't see the galaxy. As above... no special settings are normally required - the game just needs full access to the net. You'll need to investigate your software & router (gateway, whatever) settings to fix it.

This happens each time I re install the game. All I do is click Don't Connect. Wait for welcome screen then - Exit or F12.
Click deck top icon keep doing this untill I can log on to where I was last.
Some times there is a bad connection or the game server is not on line. This has something to do with the phone line. Worst case is copper line. Plus too many people using the section of line your on. Or just too many people using the net at once. Just keep at it.
UP Date: Was running late when I did the above.
When you see the welcome screen, you should see continue game. If you do not then exit or F12 and keep clicking your deck top icon untill you can log in. THere are times when you can not access the internet by land line or DSL. I use DSL and is 650 Kms from the cost or 750 Kms from Perth.
