Not everyone plays the game all the time, some players just hang around in space or on the planets to just chat so... yeah.How about starting out with newbie protection turns. Like for the first six hours or so new players are immune to attack, but also cannot attack themselves.
Scalable. So very scalable.Plan B (aka...the plan where the staff doesn't have to do anything)...you get on friendly terms with the major piraters and only trade when others arn't around...it worked for me...and it can work for you too...

Be smart and most importantly be nice and respectful to stronger players and you wont get shot.
Most of those whiners here are the ones that start flaming people with alien ships and gal. cruisers in the gal. chat. I mean come on, think about it why would a alien fighter shoot down one of those rusty space buckets.....for 20 water? I don't think so.
Strong players have invested a lot of time into that game and deserve to be respected by beginners.
