Blimp - blows up on landing ?

Post by DvdGStwrt »

This thing is slow - you know at medium throttle going a full 15 mph.

It also has nearly no friction and an airlift ratio so high that you only need to touch the throttle to get her up.

Getting her down on the other hand....

No matter how slow you are going, how "level" it is - it blows up.

Is there anything I can do to make a blimp not crash?

Blame GK :) .....Despite the inability to land the thing I found it very controllable after a few mins practice. As for it being slow, if it were any faster it would be near impossible to actually hit someone with a bomb. Like the first person cams on Drellis btw.

Few things...
1) I honestly don't find the blimps throttle to be THAT sensitive, but really... it is a blimp... it's meant to float up easily... and also move at a slow velocity.
2) I was capable of landing at the recommended settings... -15 VSI or above... Dunno what planet he's actually referring to though @_@
3) Those aren't bombs KB
4) The first person cam is fine... didn't stop zar from owning everyone with rockets (Which... really don't move along that fast anyways... dunno what that says about your reflexes  ) If you're referring to the tanks... I'm still fixing the light tanks camera.

Well it is late... while we're on the bomb thing I went ahead and put them on the blimp instead.

Um, er... I meant on my world.

However from the replies I'm getting the feeling that perhaps its 'normal' for hindenbergish blimps  I suppose this applies to planes as well. I have yet to successfully land one on any of the planets I have been to.

I had hoped there was a setting in the world editor to make blimps "fall" lighter than heavier-than-air-aircraft.

Landing any aircraft takes a bit of practice - keep it slow, level, land on something flat and (above all) make sure the VSI (vertical speed indicator) is no lower than about -10.

As for your blimp: I don't think there's a specific setting to change the gravity on aircraft control modes (there is for some ground vehicles) but you shouldn't need it: you ought to be able to get that sort of effect by playing with the normal flight control settings (air thrust, lift, etc).

I suppose it'd all be easier if balloon control mode was working, though.

Note the maximum vertical speed which you can successfully land with is controlled in the server settings.. Subgame -> Max Landing Speed. Default is -15.

The blimp I have worked on tuning the settings to where the throttle indicator line is the minimum horizontal speed (10 mph) to maintain flight. Its maximum velocity is 17-18 MPH. For the bi-plane I was going to aim for 64 MPH for maximum speed, 45 to 50 mph for minimal speed (based on the 1929 Tiger Moth DH 82A).

Subgame settings Max landing speed 0 = 170 higher numbers means that the craft can hit the ground harder. (Not an exact quote there).

So if I set that at 50 what would I get?
