Missing engine sounds

Post by Fooli »

Software:Universal Client
Version Number:0.48.9.3

Description:
Still can't see how the new engine noises have been implemented. I reinstalled the full version, they're now in my clients/sounds/engine directory, fair enough. But I still only have access to the original 8 in *settings. Is the bug in the game or in me :]

Server and client are both latest... also tried with current CVS, same thing.

In current version, 10 and 11 both work fine for me - 9 didnt coz of a typo in the filenames list which is fixed in 0.49.8.7.
Can you confirm the other 2 currently work ok?

ahh... yeh. I'd only tried #9, and as it didnae work (and the settings descriptions don't support more than 8) I just assumed the others were fecked too. Ah well :) 10 and 11 are fine. I've got a new truck sound to send ya too at some point.

While we're at it... what's the link between engine pitch and speed/accel, again? This is ctrl mode 1...

As far as I can tell, it just whacks the pitch up in response to acceleration when you move forward, so it reaches maximum pitch almost immediately even with a slow-accelerating vehicle.

Then, when you hold shift, it reaches top-top accel and engine pitch, again almost immediately.

And then, when you're running flat out, and let go of shift, the engine pitch drops instantly to the un-shifted maximum pitch. It also drops the speed immediately... hence I'm not sure whether it's linked to speed, to accel, or both in some way. Or if ctrl mode 1 is just broke.

all fixed 0.49.8.7 (control mode 1 engine pitch is now based on proportion of top speed, rather than accelerator position)

If that's the .c beta patch, I'm not sure it's quite working: seems ok with un-shifted speed, but holding shift seems to keep the sound at the same or lower pitch?

This is still an issue. I prefer the new way of doing engine noises, but there are still problemos...

- the ratio of speed to pitch is a bit weak... is there a way of providing a setting to tweak the amount of speed that triggers the top engine pitch, kinda thing? It doesn't get high enough quick enough, even with massive acceleration and a high top speed (ie I'm doin 230mph and the engine sounds like it's just ticking over. If I could control it myself I'd shut up about it :] )

- the shift thing is still there. When you let go of shift, the speed, and thus the engine pitch, drops immediately to the top "unshifted" speed, which sounds a bit crap but mostly is a bit of a gameplay issue for racing games... I'm not sure if there's a setting that controls it but I can't see why it'd do this anyway... I'd expect a gradual deceleration to the maximum "unshifted" speed based on the vehicle's friction or something. At the moment it just switches speeds instantly.

well...if your driving your car at 70 mph down the highway and suddenly let go of the pedel halfway, does the engine slowly rev down gradually or quickly? :P

Heh. Well, it doesn't suddenly drop the speed from 70mph to 30mph in the space of half a second, or there'd be a lot more accidents :)

course not. the engine sound dies, and the vehicle gradually coasts to the lower speed :P
