tips for long distance space traders

Post by Sonro »

ok - we all fall foul of silly mistakes at some point in the game, and I know these all seem obvious, but, hey, I need reminding of them occasionally too :D

1. when on a long distance trade route - keep an eye on uridium levels. theres nothing worse than running out with nowhere within reach to stock up :(

2. Make sure you actually BUY your cargo before setting off on that 30 starjump route

3. Do not, under any circumstances, leave your ship with its full cargo hold unattended in space - Piracy now works!. You may well return to find that your ship is in an unknown space station and your cargo gone, and that some attacker has suddenly jumped 20 places in the trade chart thanks to a mega-profit from your cargo. (I will have my revenge - you know who you are!!!!!!!!! )

I'm looking for tips ...

i began my traders 'venture today, and i got now 61 $ (trading water)

but there is a problem ! as long as i cant use the infimp drive on a cargo ships, and not the finit drive with stuffs in cargo i can only travel the good old way ...
So, i can only trade water ! ^_^

so can someone tell me if maybe after when i will be rich i cant buy a cargo where i can use the drives or maybe something else i dont know.
and in the case i can not, is there anyway to get that cargo ship faster ?

thx !

OK - firstly stick at it - it can be alot of long, hard work initially :)

you should have a stardrive (L4 i think) - which will let you trade between cirrus Minor and Tau Ceti. This is the only drive that will let you jump systems while carying cargo. Hit f6 to bring up the galactic map, use your mouse to click the system in range, and click the stardrive icon (top of the drive icons on the left of the screen) When you're cash improves you will be able to upgrade you stardrive - L8, 24 and 40 are all available at a cost.

use a pen and paper, and check the system trade reports for what is available within your price range, making a note of where you can buy/sell items, and keep running the trade route until its exhausted - fipro/infimp around when your cargo is empty to check. as your cash improves you will be able to afford better cargos with better profit margins.

gradualy build up your ship specs - increasing cargo capacity and stardrive level as and when you can afford it, remembering to make sure you have enough cash left over to buy a cargo :)

eventually, build up to a gal freighter - decent ship with good capacity and speed - ship stats can be found here: http://theuniversal.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4144 (you may find something you like the look of better than the freighter - your choice, but if you're getting into the trade side of things I would recommend it)

One thing to remember - cargo extensions and stardrives are not cumulative - only the biggest will work. (so you can't buy 3x10ton extensions and carry an additional 30tons)
You can sell them back at various stations, rather than having them in your ship inventory, but dont expect to make a profit on them.

hope all this helps

Oki, why not ? :)

I knew that. But travelling with the basic speed is NOT fast : /

Oh ! Oki ! 40 seems enough for me

Argh ! I already make my own home-made "report" with my first ship. And you tell me there is one already done ! :x :x :x

Oh ! Ok. I saw on "10T Cargo bay extenstion" on Zoric ! But ... 800  (probably nothing for a high lvl :D )

yep - click the red "comm station" icon (bottom right corner) - and it shows up at the bottom of the list. you can also access it in stations, on the trade menu. costs 0.1cr, but worth it :) you will have to pay for it the first time you access it in any system - but it your use remaains free whilst still in that system. if you leave the system, and return later you will have to pay the 0.1cr again.

yep - its pretty slow in the beginning Someone (fooli or mit I htink) worked out that it takes about 8 or 9 hours trading to get up to a decent spec ship and a good stash of cash. after that, its all a matter of how much time you want to put in. s'not really that much worse than getting started on planets for the first time - just the distances involved are longer :)
