A Galactic Quest

Post by Mit »

I've been asked to forward this message by a bit of code i wrote..

Code: Select all

Greetings travellers,
I am the representative of the glorious civilisation of the Yureshans, enthusiastic meths drinkers and one of most technologically advanced species in the galaxy.

For centuries now our people have been happy and content (and significantly spannered) thanks to the magical properties of certain ancient 'orbs' - the orbs of the holy methanol. In the recent past, (stardate v0.49.7), a collective of violent and greedy aliens has threatened our entire existence and concept of reality, by stealing our holy orbs and then running away with them and hiding. We not know why they do this.

Please help us by retrieving our glorious orbs - lest we sober up and have to face the Galaxy's Worst Hangover. (The GWH)

If you can deliver us one full set of our four holy orbs, we will exchange them for the galaxy's most advanced and sought-after ship - the "Galaxy Cruiser" - a ship that only we posess.
Anyone capable of delivering the orbs will also be rewarded with 10 Galactic Prestige, and to the first person to deliver us the orbs we offer a special prize * - choose one from the list below :

  - $42 (USD) to the paypal account of your choice
  - An 'exclusive' The Universal t-shirt and mug combo
  - 2 Playstation2 Games **

Finding us should not be difficult if you have any wit ; as for recovering our orbs - well on that we can help you none. But one word of warning - if you should locate any of our orbs, tell no-one where they are : If the aliens realise their location has been compromised they will move and hide elsewhere.

Good luck! Our sobriety depends on you!
* Staff reserve control of the prize option should there be any bugs/exploits that affect the running of the quest. If either is found, please report it as soon as possible to the bug reports forums or by email (if it contains sensitive info) to enquiries [at] theuniversal.net. Anyone discovered using (and not reporting) an exploit will be barred from the competition (and possibly the game). If you are unsure if something is an exploit, bug or feature - report it anyway!
** From a limited selection - UK / PAL region only
*** mm, p.s. Drinking meths is stupid :]

On a sunny day when we were underage, frollicking in the park as people do who cant get into public houses my friends and i were approached by a man who offered to sell us a bottle of whiskey. we proffered our pocket money and took reciept of the said botlle. supping it greedily we all took swigs and found it tasted horrible, But alcohol does doesnt it!
As the Ambulece man pumped my friends stomach on the sun warmed park grass he said why in the hell did you drink meths.
That taught me to not only not accept sweets from strangers do not buy alcohol either or at least not without checking the seal is not broken first.
Ahh happy days.

PS. Nice space photo sonro

congrats, sonro... let me know via email which of the prizes you'd like.

no idea why you'd have problems with the encounters stuff, bongz, when it seems to work ok for me and everyone else. Your desc. in the email looks particularly odd coz the bit where it adds the item is the same bit of a code where it removes the cash, so itd be difficult for one to happen without the other.. I dont suppose you happened to have an awful lot of stuff in your inventory at the time did u?
Will check to see if the gal is producing any errors next time i get the chance - may need to do some trials with you next time we're online together.

err... i did ... 3 times now. not even so much as an acknowledgement

appreciate time's been a bit mad, what with getting married (Congrats BTW), and work & hols and all that stuff, but the quest was back in May, and .... nada, zip, zilch

none of the quest completers seem to have recieved their in-game rewards either... (50 gal prestige, if i recall)

BTW - discovered the other day Chezzie's accounts been reset. I know neither of us has played much of late, but wasn't expecting that - there doesn't seem to be an indication of that happening for not logging in for a while, other than on ind. worlds. needless to say he's a little miffed, after being top of the space richlist and getting his funky Alien Cruiser...

*flog mit (he very bad at remembering he's got email when he reads it at work but can't reply til he gets home) (and yeh busy busy) (but *flog him lots anyway)

Um... there's no reason why Chezzie's account would have been reset: there hasn't been a galaxy-wide reset, and I assume your account is ok (for example). Which only leaves, er... some weird bug, some weird behaviour from the staff (but I can't imagine anyone would have wiped the account), or some weird hack attempt, which seems equally unlikely.

Is it completely wiped - like a !resetme sorta wiped?

Easy enough to sort out replacement items and stuff. Somehow I get the feeling he'd be able to provide an itemised list :)

yep - its a complete and total !resetme sorta wipe - he has a basic freighter and 100cr - took him 15 mins to reach ariya
(my account is as it was...)

will email you ship & account info

the only info he could get at the time was from another player who reckoned it was cos he hadn't logged on in a while...

*fooli flogging mit* - seems kinda kinky now he's a married man

If there is an expiry on galaxy characters I'd hope it was a lot longer than 30 days.. and we ought to make it known somewhere obvious. I just assumed they never expired; then I remembered a vague drunken conversation with mit, and something about freeing up IDs... then I realised I couldn't remember the conclusion of that conversation. So i've asked the other staff to have a look and maybe we'll get a definitive answer.

i don't mean to sound rude, but if he wasen't playing at all anymore, he had no need to remain on the top list and should accept the fact that he lost his stuff instead of being pansy off about it.

just like a player owning a much needed building on an economy world but barly ever coming on to sell what it made. or a player becoming #1 wealth on an economy world, then only logging in once a week to avoid the inactivity timer just so they stay on the wealth list. thiers no point in having something just for the sake of having it or if your never going to log in and make use of it. let the people who actually play and are active take over.

I disagree... I think... although I suppose there's an argument for some sort of inactivity decay at a galactic level. The counterargument that I'd use is that, for the spacey Elite-type gameplay, it's more about long-term pottering around than dedicated daily activity. It's all very well on worlds, where people can choose to play somewhere with or without a time limit, but in the galaxy... hmm.

Anyway, I guess there will be as many views on that as we care to ask for. But whatever the situation I think we need to make it clearer that there is, or is not a time limit for activity - something we don't do at the moment, as far as I'm aware... if a player like Chez didn't know about it, I doubt many other people do.

inactivity decay - fair enough. losing a house or a business on a world where there is a stated requirement to log on and play on a v regular basis, fair enough.

But to lose not only your place in the space chart but everything that had been earned and worked for over 6 months of regular game play, simply because you havent played for a couple of weeks, (and not because someone came along while you were away and and earned more, as kb32a overtook me in the gal chart for instance) is a bit unfair. If either of us had known that there was a "log in or lose it" requirement, that'd be diffrent. but we didnt.

If there is such a policy - it needs to be advertised. if its a bug or a minor glitch, I'm guessing it can be fixed.
