Help on Connecting

Post by Hakkar »

Well whenever I go and try and play The Universal an error messgae shows up. Here it is

****Error****
Couldnt find a suitable z-depth format. You may need to chanmge your desktop
display format (from 32bit to 16bit, for instance) for this game to work.

Alternatively, check for video card updates of your drivers.

What do I do.

I got my desktop to High 16bit color, 800 by 600 screen resolution and by specs are

Windows 98
64 RAM
Direct 9.0c

and I'm connected at a 56k modem

thats all I really know of considersing it's my dads

Hope some one can help me out.

Ok. Have you tried changing the bitdepth of your desktop?

As far as I know this sort of error is usually to do with your graphics card and drivers. If you let us know what card you're running someone might be able to help.

Been a while since I used win98, but.... right click on the desktop; choose "properties"; then "settings"; then there should be a menu called "colours" that'll let you choose.

OK. It's one of mit's "comedy" error messages. The translation means "if you've tried 16-bit and it doesn't work, try 32-bit - and vice versa". Ignore the other settings.

Best thing to do is START > RUN > dxdiag > Let it load, test and run everything > Save Diagnosis to .txt file. Copy and paste that here on the forums so the dev's can see everything about your computer's hardware.

Okay well here is the info I got off of it.

System Info

OP: Microsoft Windows 98
Memory: 64MB RAM
Processor: Intel Pentium 2, MMX, ~340MHz
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c

Display Info

Name: RAGE PRO TURBO AGP 2X
Chip Set: Mach 64: Rage PRo
DAC Type: Internal
Approx. Total Memory: 8.0 MB
Current Display Mode: 800 x 600 (16 bit)

Hopefully that helps.

Hmmm. Well I'm no expert but it seems to me that system is right at the bottom end of what we might consider "entry level minimum system requirements" :)

I'd be amazed if that gfx card had dx 8 drivers let alone dx9. If you've tried the different desktop bit depths I dunno. I think we recommend at least 16Mb of graphics mem, and preferably (er.. 128mb?). It could be that your hardware just isn't capable of running the game. Can anyone else help?

Approx. Total Memory: 8.0 MB

is rather low all that.. tho.. theoretically itd cope. theoretically.

Can you try changing your display mode size up from 800x600 to 1024x or is that the max you can get?

No I can go to 1600 by 1200.

Okay. Anyway I will be getting some upgrades in my RAM, MHz, and GFX cards to play EverQuest2 anyway so once I get those hopefully I can play then.

i know a lot about comps and i can tell you that your RAM is way to low your comp will use 75% of that with all programs off so you need to go tell your dad to go to the store and buy a at lest what i have 512 ram chip the only down side you have to open the comp and manualy put the chip in.
