I've been on lately chatting to people along trade routes and i've heard that people are losing all of their cargo when their ship was blown up. Is this true and if it is does the attacker get all of the lost cargo?

Space Cargo Question
Space piracy can happen - its a relatively new feature, and has been tested by myself and mit to see if it works - it does. If a pirate manages to destroy your ship, they can retrieve your cargo and go sell it themselves.
I haven't heard about this happening to anyone yet other than myself whilst testing, but i havent had much time to play recently - so it could be happening.
weapons are banned in federation space, so you are safe trading in Cirrus Minor and Tau Ceti. Other systems are a bit more treacherous.
If you're worried about being attacked, and have the money - upgrade your ship and buy some missiles and counter measures (from Iridis I think) - you should be able to ward of an attack if you're quick enough. if you're wanting to get in on the piracy - same applies.
There should also be a bounty system in place now, so if you kill a pirate you are rewarded (dunno how much yet)

When you die in space you lose all your cargo: it floats in space for a short while afterwards, so if your attacker manages to pick it up (fly into it) they'll get it. If they don't get it in time (don't know how long, but only 30s or so I think) the cargo auto-destructs and disappears.
It's basically the start of the whole space piracy thing. Combat isn't that great at the moment (it needs a bit more balancing) but the idea is that, the farther out you go, the less safe it'll be... in theory pirates will be able to make money killing people and stealing their stuff. In return they'll get a bounty on their heads, thus creating bounty hunters to balance it all out again. And probably lots of angry traders like yourself (congrats on #5, btw :)

/edit: replies are like buses. You wait hours and hours then two come along at once :]

OK I'm useing my IMP drive everywhere now! I love my IMP drive! I is a lifesaver! I hit home get up to full speed and then I IMP drive to the planet I want to go and BAM! I crash into the planet safely!
But cargo ships are the weakest like of all! They take 3 hits from a pirate ship and then explode! Err I could be off there.

Now that, fooli, is the danger of using design goals as a basis for support replies :].When you die in space you lose all your cargo: it floats in space for a short while afterwards, so if your attacker manages to pick it up (fly into it) they'll get it. The cargo is transferred serverside as soon as you are killed atm. The scooping up of floating cargo bits (which is pretty much how it worked in Elite) is the intention for later.

you never told me that when you killed me and stole my cargo.
another ? to add to Fooli's list - how much is bounty gonna be on the naughty people that try and steal my mega-expensive cargo? will there be a bounty on "failed"pirates (ie those try but cant manage to kill me) or just those who succeed?
