got my new pc running yesterday and logged it into sabrada with a new name so could see what people were upto without knowing i was thier.
landed on the planet and a File Transfer Error went zipping by while downloading the first bits of world conenction stuff. usually a client can still connect with it, but it diden't. sat thier chatting acting as a new player for 10 mins before relogging the client because it was just showing white and not downloading the sabrada.imp file (or anything else).
if a new player were to join and get stuck like that, they might think the game sucks and leave not knowing thier client has an error while trying to connect if they don't notice the red text that flys by with everything else when joining a world.
File Transfer Error could poorly effect new players
yeh.. not suggesting that can be changed.. just hilighting the fact that the file transfer can be wonky.. and the more it does the more wonky it can get. Its possible that the initial one fails because someone else is in the process of downloading a model or something from the server.it wasen't a model download though, it was the initial connection stuff.
i believe it was the sabrada.imp file, which is part of the map and thus can't be on the web, right?
Could well be nothing to do with that and connected only to having a brand new character.. no idea what would do that, but i'll investigate..
zar, which variation of the 'lazy mode' does sabrada use?
I've tried various methods on my test world so far to replicate it (complete re-installs on the laptop, deleting all world-related files, resetting the player records on the world etc etc) and not been able to replicate it. Could you send me an .isl of sabrada please so i can see if its something specific about the island setup?
If you can replicate it yourself (a reinstall on your new puter and a wipe of the character perhaps?), could you give me details of how u did it?
Also.. a long shot... but if you have any of the output from the server's system tab for when you first logged in with your new character id be interested in having a look at that.

I believe the updates to the new file-transfer system in the v0.51.8 server and client should be enough of an improvement to mark this bug fixed. The new FT system is much more advanced than the existing one.. the way it sends file packets to the client is much more efficient, it reacts better when there is a lot of file transfers being sent from your server simultaneously (dynamically adapting the transfer speed for each transfer in progress and thereby causing less lag for other players on your world) and it has the added benefit that you can limit the maximum amount of bandwidth all concurrent file transfers will consume.
Thats not to say the new system might not have its own, different bugs - however i've fixed a few major remaining issues with it for 0.51.8 and so far in testing it has proven to be quite robust.
fingers crossed etc ;]
