I hate SQL
it deserves to die. I was enjoying the 'space trade' thread too

dont know if youve ever managed a site with just over 11k regustererd users but doing a backup via mysql + server timeouts and excessive loads is no mean feat the end backup file is just over 37mbs at this current time.Freako wrote:well this just goes to show that you need to do weekly backups and optimise your db every other day
just my 2 very annoting cents.
also physically having time to take up all the system resources on my machine and network is not always feasible, therefore i have to wait until the office is relatively empty at work
as it is it was relatively lucky i was in the office today and hadnt taken a lunch break and that i was in the right place with the right file and the 1.5 hours it took to restore the db.
not quite sure how that is going to help leig it wasnt phpbb that crashed it was the webserver, plus (without starting a flame war) my personal opinion is that phpbb is still the best forum software about, and without it many of the functions this site uses wouldnt be possible without multiple logins to various areas. As it is a single login now operates the entire site both from an end user and a admin perspective.leigon wrote:Why don't you get a better forum softwere.... like vBulliten.
While i'll leave the techie argument to our techies, all i'd add is that - having just found out how much it costs us to run this site each month - you should all be glad you get to play and take advantage of the site features for nothing, that magic & others maintain it for nothing, and that it all works at all given that we're just a big bunch of useless monkeys.
Yay for mySQL - we've found something even more broken than the game :)

well, as far as I'm concerned - thanks to Magic for getting it fixed so quickly! - OK - so some of us have had to re-register and lost a few forum posts, but at the end of the day, its a frustration not a disaster.
I think I said to mit a few days ago, I've had to pay for tech support in the past that hasn't been either as effective or as swift as what we get on TU.
Well done guys, 'bout time you got a bit of credit for your efforts!
Mit / Fooli - whats all this about gorgeous and lovely - you both look like a couple of monkeys to me!

heh. It's what comes of our respective partners being friends, talking about us, and someone listening in. And then, mostly in mit's case, someone stirring as vigorously as possible :)
I admit I look a bit like a monkey. But yes, it's true: Mit does look like a couple of monkeys. He really needs to exercise more...

He is right leig, PhpBB is very good, easy template system, and the login system is portable. vBulliten is powerful but complicated and its not open sourced(last i checked).

37mbs isn't much, what spec is the machine thats it's on? Ok, on the mysql side of things i've never dealt with that size, but on the ms sql i've got a 132mb backup and it's realativly quick to backup and restore on a cel 2.4, 1gig ramMagicfinger wrote: dont know if youve ever managed a site with just over 11k regustererd users but doing a backup via mysql + server timeouts and excessive loads is no mean feat the end backup file is just over 37mbs at this current time.

Why are people so smitten with vB? Don't you have to pay for a yearly license (as seen on webhosttalk with people trying to sell them) for a forum that you can get just as good, if not better for free?Magicfinger wrote:not quite sure how that is going to help leig it wasnt phpbb that crashed it was the webserver, plus (without starting a flame war) my personal opinion is that phpbb is still the best forum software about, and without it many of the functions this site uses wouldnt be possible without multiple logins to various areas. I once had a MySQL DB at 185MB's but it was all from a Robots.txt search script.
