Phong goes beta: testers required

Post by Fooli »

Planet Phong is open for some initial testing. Don't expect anything to work very well.

Find it with your infimp. Password is "beta".

What it is: a top-down futuristic shooter, in the style of Infantry.

What you do: choose a character (*vehicle 2-6) and shoot people.

How you win: you probably can't, but it's 1 kudos per kill, so... most kudos, then.

Any feedback is appreciated. Bear in mind: a) I know it's mostly broken b) it's the sort of game you either love or hate, and c) dammit Jim I'm a modeller not a world designer :)

Some other stuff:
- All characters have just one weapon for now - tab and shift+tab do the same thing. The only exception is the scout, who has a jetpack too. I'll add grenades or something once mit fixes the control system.

- control is meant to be a *little* bit slow and fiddly - I want this to be a bit tactical, not just steaming about at 300mph. Having said that I know the control needs work here and there. Well everywhere really.

- You can't change the camera, so don't ask. To start with I want to make it an even playing field for everyone (as far as possible) - so everyone has the same view.

- Eventually it'll be a team-based game, but either I don't understand the team system properly or mit needs to update it a bit before it'll work the way I want.

- yes, I've locked the models (hopefully). I will release them at some point in the future if anyone else wants to play with them. For now, locking them is partly an experiment to see if locking works; partly an experiment to see if locking helps maintain world visitor numbers (ie if you wanna play on jetbikes, you'll have to come to Phong for now); and partly so when I eventually release the models, they'll have any glitches in the animations and stuff all fixed and proper.

- some nice lil cosmetic features are still work in progress, such as... working weapon attach points, seeing other people firing in the right direction, and muzzle flashes. This stuff mostly works in the latest dev client - we just need mit to finalise it and release it to the pub. Hopefully soon.

- the textures are shite cos I did 'em. Except for any nice ones you find: they're hedge's.

- there's probably a huge backstory in the works but who cares - just shoot stuff and have fun :)

Stick that in yer Phong and smoke it!

Ok. Well that was interesting. The initial test revealed several fairly critical issues that mean a top-down shooter doesn't work at all until a few bugs are fixed :)

Next test in a few days, hopefully.

Thanks to the devoted testing crew:

FinalSoul
Minku
Kirby
Scrag
Magicfinger
Hedgehog (no really)

and anyone else I forgot who joined, and failed to do much else than fly about on jetbikes round an imaginary racecourse shooting at something 90 degrees to the right of what they were aiming at :)
