THE REPUBLIC NEWBIE GUIDE!!

Post by Malkiah »

This is a step by step guide to lvl 1, everything from there on out is trial by error experienced results of learning.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome!
Hello, Welcome to The Republic, on this planet we start you off in the stone age, you must gather your resources to get stuff done here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------You find yourself surrounded by grass, a Shaman Hut, and some shoreline to your left - The Shaman's Hut is the prehistoric equivalent of your first school, but this is no freebie, the first skill requires 2 hides..

---------- Off to the South East are some apes walking arround, use Tab/Shift Tab to throw spears at them, everytime you hit one you get 1 hide, so kill 2 apes to collect 2 hides. Now travel back north west to the Shaman Hut, hit Ctrl to access it, hit End key on Exchange for Skill, use page down and page up to scroll up and down through menu options, then select Tool making.

----------Congratulations, you just got your first skill!
By now im sure have done some exploring and seen a few trees.. Access the trees (using Ctrl) and use Gather, you should recieve 10-20 wood, you may only due this once at each tree in turn, or any other buildings that have the gather option.

----------- Now that we have some wood, access your build menu by hitting Ctrl 3 times or clicking the pick axe icon on top left corner of the screen, access Build, then choose Tool shop, make sure you have the wood required to construct this structure, once it is all layed out, you have your first building.

-----------Now in order to make flint tools for the other 2 skills left at the Shaman Hut youll need a new resource called Flint. To the north of Eden are 2 flint mines, explore for these and gather some flint, then go back to your tool shop. Drop off some wood and fint and it to start making flint tools.

-----------While you wait you might want to get more familiar with your surroundings or the interface, do this now. once your tools are ready, go to your toolshop, select Remove Stocks and take out all the flint tools, preferably get at least 4.. Now back to the shaman's hut and get the Boat Building skill.

Hopefully by now you'll have the idea and know what to expect to have to do with the boat building skill. By finding more resources like flint, and by exchanging and learning new skills and using new items you'll be able to develop more advanced technologies like stone tools - and eventually 'money' - and soon you'll get the skills required to build a 'Lvl:1' building which will progress you to the status of 'Ancient'.

There are 5 'ages' in the game : Prehistoric, Ancient, Medieval, Industrial and Future.. The first players to progress through all five get to choose what happens to civilisation in the end :]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HINTS:
-Try not to carry too much, when you reach lvl 1 you should drop any form of slate your carrying.
-Opun reaching level 1 it is safe to forget skills: Ship Building and Tool making.
-Open up gold mines and get demanded jobs right away to add to your income.
-Only worry about tasks at hand and not what is on other player's minds.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hope you dont mind, i did a lil bit of editing on it.. (shortened a bit as we wanna let the ppl have to work out some thing :] + fixed couple of lil factual errors and removed references to specific towns n stuff, that won't necessarily be there next time round..)

and while im here, i perhaps should point out that the current version of the republic thats up there is still very much a trial of the finished product. One of the biggest things im testing there is just how long it takes for people to progress through all the ages and finish off humanity.. (So far, it seems like the current place will take at least a couple of days online before anyone does it..)... when its all complete i'll set up 2 separate worlds, one where getting to the end of lvl 5 will take maybe 2-4 hours, and one lasting more like 2-7 days.

I just noticed the restoring costs are about 10-15 times higher than they were as recently as last night...

Well, there's nowhere to sell gold to so I'm stuck in the ancient age. Can someone build a shop plz? I have one but I can't sell gold to my own shop.

edit: why are you made so dependent on other people to advance? When nobody is there and nobody's showing up, it stalls the game. Also it means that in order to win you need to have a team.

Welll... i reckon thats a good thing, as it promotes teamwork & social play. Its also somewhat 'realistic'.. ya wouldn't get far in the real world without others there to help you. Yeh, its a problem sometimes when the game stalls coz theres no-one around, but thats a fair price to pay for an online game i reckon. (Otherwise you might as well go play something single-player).
To my mind, the techniques you need to get around stalls like that (which include posting here, as you've done, or joining chat channels with like-minded players, or finding newbies in space and directing em to the world, or encouraging your mates to play, etc etc..) are as much a part of the gameplay as the building stuff itself. So yeh.. in order to win you do probably need to have a team.. which leads to the obvious conclusion that you should probably get a team together :)
